I was completely shocked when a man suggested the reason my business is successful is “because I wear a skirt and I have long hair”

To give a bit of context, his offer is pretty similar to mine, but he’s not been getting clients.

There was a time when I would have been furious about a comment like that.

It’s hard work delivering as a Director in a business, and then successfully starting and running your own business.

But I’m not furious or even annoyed.

I was shocked because it’s not a comment you expect someone to make, and especially not in 2024…

Think your senior manager’s negative attitude is just “a phase”? Here’s why talking to them now is crucial… 👇

When a member of your team appears to be disgruntled & they’re being “off” with you... 

And you've asked if they're OK. 

it’s perfectly understandable that you assume, they don’t want to talk to you. 

But left like this, it’s the beginning of the end.

The person then starts moaning about you to their colleagues. 

It gets disproportionate. 

And in the end that person leaves. 

It's a big problem with hidden consequences. 

I’ve seen get MD's get completely distracted and derailed by this.. 

In cycles of worrying about how they're handling it, whether that key person will leave, then feeling frustrated, annoyed, and let down. 

What I’ve come to learn is that when people behave like this, it can’t be left to “sort itself out”

What’s actually going on here is that your employee is struggling to work out how to tell you what's wrong. 

There's a communication void & everyone is filling it with their own interpretation. 

I remember having this situation myself. 

A senior manager in my team was being “off” with me.

I broached the “elephant in the room” with him. 

When he said he was fine, I pointed out what I’d noticed... 

“It seems like your answers are shorter than they used to be, so it doesn’t really seem like you’re fine to me. 

I’d really love to know what’s going on, so we can sort this out together. You do a great job for me”.

I carried on the conversation with type of language, and some questions I know get these situations sorted. 

We got to the heart of the problem. 


It turns out that he was annoyed about how I’d handled a situation.

I hadn’t appreciated how he felt about it. 

It was an innocent misunderstanding. 

After our conversation we ended up closer than before & he worked even harder for me.

When these situations happen, your employee needs you to talk to them, so you can both get back to enjoying building the business together.

Coaching doesn't work 

People often tell me they've tried it and not got the results they hoped for... 

I can appreciate that as I've been in the same situation myself. 

Back when I was employed, I hired a coach. 

I remember sharing that I wanted to... 

🔸 Stop overthinking what I'd said or done (or had to say or do) 

🔸 Be able to influence strong characters

“I hired the sales person to sell, but I’m not seeing the results I expected”

"They're supposed to be the expert, so I didn't think I'd need to get involved.."

My client shared this last week. 

It’s a common problem that many business owners face.

You hire a sales person to increase sales and build the business. 

But months, or even a year or two later, you’re still not seeing results.

You’ve never had to manage a sales person before and understandably you're not sure how to deal with it.

You thought you’d hired someone experienced - who wouldn’t need that.

It seems wrong that you need to manage a person on such a high salary.

It’s a challenge that I regularly help clients  solve, so that they get their sales person selling.

The starting point with my client last week was to create a straight forward sales plan. 

Initially, we did that together, so that he could replicate the process with the sales person.

Here's how we did it: 

🔥 We identified what strategies brought in their existing clients. They've worked before, so are a good place to start. 

🔥 We brain stormed other ideas together & I shared what works based on my experience. 

🔥 We shortlisted the best strategies. 

🔥 We ran through all the objections and concerns, that the sales person might raise & prepared how to how to handle them 

🔥 We determined just a small number of critical KPI’s, that would allow my client to monitor progress 

That's it.

My client has a solid structure to follow with the sales person. 

When I prepare like this with clients, it means they can still develop the plan with the sales person - so they're not telling them what to do or micro managing. 

It gives them an example of what a good plan looks like. 

It gives them certainty that they'll handle the conversation well & are prepared to deal with any push back.

It gives them reassurance that they’re doing the right thing & the comfort of knowing that they’ll finally resolve the situation.

Through this process, clients shift their sales person back into action and give them focus and direction so they bring in the business.

It can be so frustrating when our team won't come around to new ways of working 

It’s quite natural to start to feel like: 

- They’re blocking things 

- Or they aren’t flexible 

- Or maybe even see them as having a "bad attitude"

What I’ve noticed is that when some people are confronted with a change

They can get pretty worked up and a bit emotional

Or go quiet and be a bit sulky…

➡️ Have you seen this? 

When I'm working with clients they can find these hard to deal with.

I know I have myself.. 

What I find really useful to keep in mind, as all this plays out... 

Is that what’s driving the way they’re being is feeling uncertain, undervalued, or not heard.

It helps keep their reaction in perspective 

Whilst it might not be true in our eyes

It doesn’t mean that’s not how they’re seeing it.

We’ve probably all been in that place ourselves at some point.

It’s so unlikely that it’s a deliberate - “bad attitude”

It’s more likely that they’re:

🔹Worried about whether they’ll be able to do what’s needed

🔹Frustrated because it seems like no one listens to them

🔹Disappointed because they wanted to be more involved or share some ideas.

The thing is, once emotions get involved, they might look like they’re being deliberately difficult 

And then it can seem really hard to solve.

Making us more inclined to ignore it and hope it goes away 

Or dismiss it out of hand and move on

Or even pay lip service to it.

Through experience, I’ve found the best next step is to actually get under the skin of the problem and find out what’s really driving it.

➡️ Once you know what you’re dealing with, it’s always easier to solve.
