My goal is to sound the clarion call for older women to come together and examine what aging and body image means for them and for our culture. That’s why, at 71, and after four decades of working in the fields of nonprofit administration and Eating Disorders, I’m embarking on a new chapter as a Thought Leader on women and aging. Older women live at the intersection of sexism and ageism, and much of what we see and hear in Western Culture are unrealistic images of older women. We start to relate to these images — and fall terribly short — so that these messages become pernicious and self-destructive as we internalize them. You can find me talking and writing about these issues through panels, webinars, interviews, social media and media in general, web content, blogs, articles (maybe even a book!) and working with women individually and in small groups. We are the generation who experienced collective “conscious raising” in our late teens and twenties. Now it’s time for us to come together again to support each other, own our aging bodies and how fabulous we are, and to let the world know that we’re not invisible and, most importantly, we’re not dead yet!
