By documenting each business case and testing each business case within the testing environment, the tool still worked post environment upgrade.

- Developed and implemented a New College Grad Program that supported first year engineers to understand NetApp culture and business acumen

I was happy with my job. I loved the people, the work, and the growth I experienced there. But then an unexpected opportunity showed up. It was scary and cool and challenging in all the ways that make your stomach drop and your intuition sit up straight. I knew in my bones it was the next step.

And the wildest part? I did not chase it. It came to me.

I have only made one internal move in my entire career. And that move started with a simple, unplanned conversation with a cross functional partner. One chat turned into an opportunity. That opportunity turned into an interview. And within three months, I shifted into a new department without ever having to leave the company.

That experience taught me something powerful: you do not always have to walk away to grow. Sometimes your next chapter is already inside the building.

Because here is how golden ticket opportunities actually show up:
It is really one of those moments where someone says, “Hey, do you know someone who can do A, B, C? I know it sounds weird, but that’s what I need right now.”

And their friend or colleague responds with, “Actually, I do. It is weird, and I know the perfect person full of the weirdness. Let me send a text message.”

That is how it happens. Quietly. Privately. Person to person.

Golden ticket opportunities are often built for you long before you ever hear about them. They are never marketed. You are chosen for them. And you are chosen because people know your work, your character, and your value. That only happens when you build real relationships across the company and let your strengths be visible in the right rooms.

In many public spaces, I’m applauded for my professional authenticity. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard: “How do you find the courage to be you?” Well, since you asked…I wasn’t raised to be palatable.

And trust me, that’s been both a blessing and a battle.

I was raised by parents who never lived for other people’s opinions. Their mission was clear: root me in integrity, resilience, hard work, community, and the courage to speak up when it matters. Growing up in the same city that raised them meant I was held by an entire village that echoed those values. If I didn’t like what my parents said, there was always a cousin, an Auntie, a grandparent, a great uncle, or that one elder who knew my family’s history ready to check me loudly.

It sounds beautiful in theory, but in practice it was tough, especially in middle and high school. The bullying was real. And bullying might not even be the right word as it was sometimes more sinister. One summer I received a threat in my mailbox saying that if I returned to school, I would be beat up.

So no, I don’t know how not to be authentic. Even when it costs me something.
I don’t know how to perform a more comfortable version of myself so someone else can feel at ease.

And yet, I actively tried. During my first year of adulting, I attempted the palatable path. I copied how everyone else acted because my imposter syndrome was loud and running the show.

Where did that get me?On a performance improvement plan.

Trying to be everyone else in my own skin was never going to work. So I made myself a promise that still guides me today: If I’m going to fail, I will fail while being myself. That is when everything shifted.

I started developing my own definition of professional authenticity, choosing what parts of me to bring into the workplace and learning how to use them to create and execute high impact work.

And then the magic happened. The people who loved it, loved it. They mentored and sponsored me. They said my name in rooms I did not even know existed.
The people who hated it, hated it loudly.

But I never centered them. I doubled down on the people who saw me. And my career took off.

Here is what I know now:
Authenticity is a superpower, but it only shows up when you stop auditioning for approval from people who do not want to see you shine.

So many people stay stuck in the question, "What if they do not like me?"

But the truth is, I never had the luxury of people pleasing. For better or worse, I was raised to stand firmly in my values.

And I will not glorify it. I have paid real prices for that stance. But it is the only way I know how to move.

And honestly,It is the only way I want to.

PS: If everybody likes you, that is a RED flag. People with real backbones ruffle feathers. That may be a separate post for a different day though.
