🧽 I worked in hospitality as a teenager, I was a kitchen porter at Liverpool Football Club. I worked for £2.75 an hour and washing pots at a venue hosting 45,000 people was a tough intro to the working wold for a 16-year old! 🧱 After that, I moved into retail. I landed a graduate trainee programme in management at Jewson builders merchant and my management journey started. I was fascinated with the idea of people working together and how some businesses could do it well and others couldn't. ❌ Here's the problem - it's difficult to get staff to consistently do the things you need them to do. Every day I hear some variation of the below three quotes: "I wish my team could work without me being around." A frustrated Director "I don't know if food compliance checks are being done." A worried Chef "I end up doing most jobs myself because it's easier." A tired Manager 👩🏽‍🍳 There's a sizeable shortage of labour in hospitality and retail and a considerable management skills gap. Businesses don't have the manpower to closely supervise and motivate teams anymore. Managers and Supervisors are doing the job of three or four people and so time spent coaching and motivating team members is less than ever.
