AI APPLIED: AUGMENT, NOT REPLACE

In the U.S., AI is developed as a replacement in the mindset of the market - a new frontier that disrupts industries, jobs, and human workflows. It's "Look! Here's a better version! Throw the old one out!".

In China, AI is developed as an additional layer that amplifies existing ecosystems - a tool to make current systems faster, smarter & more profitable. It's "Look! We've improved on what we have! Everyone can use it right away!". 

This sounds nuanced but it's causing very interesting divergence between the 2 biggest economies.  

Chinese digital media giant Tencent just revealed a technology that could transform advertising forever. 

Instead of pausing a broadcast for a commercial, Tencent’s AI uses computer vision to embed ads directly into the video - dynamically, intelligently, and seamlessly.

Picture this:
An actor holding a plain coffee cup on screen. Tencent’s AI identifies the object, replaces it with a branded version and personalizes it based on who’s watching.

You might see a Starbucks logo. Someone in Shanghai might see Luckin Coffee. Someone else in Chengdu might see a local café brand.

All in the same scene. All in real time.

This is an important feature of the Chinese mindset: Commercialize fast, refine continuously.

To me, this captures the essence of China’s edge in the AI era: not just building smarter tools, but embedding intelligence where it creates immediate commercial value.

CHINA’S SMARTEST PR MOVE YET: THE 30-DAY VISA-FREE GAMBIT

This didn’t make many headlines, but 2024 saw what is likely the largest tourism surge to a single country in modern history.

Since February 2024, China has had a 30-day visa-free policy to more than 70 countries, allowing tourists to enter freely and experience the country first-hand.

It began with Singapore and Thailand, and then expanded across Europe, Latin America, and Oceania - a quiet yet powerful campaign to show, not tell, the truth about modern China.

The results speak volumes:
- 64.9 million foreign arrivals in 2024 (+83% YoY) - nearly double 2023’s 35.5 million. The largest surge in 2024.
- This catapulted China from outside the global Top 10 in 2023 to #4 most-visited country in 2024, behind only France, Spain & the U.S.
- In H1 2025, visa-free arrivals hit 13.6 million (71% of total) - roughly three-quarters of London’s full-year traffic.
- In Q3 2025, another 7.2 million visa-free visits were logged (+48% YoY) 

It is not slowing down, and where are tourists going?

China’s most-visited cities tell their own story. Beijing draws visitors for its imperial landmarks and political gravitas. Shanghai dazzles as a hypermodern metropolis - the face of China’s reform & ambition. Xi’an connects travellers to the country’s ancient roots, the cradle of dynasties and the Silk Road.

And then there’s Chongqing - the new cultural magnet. Beloved by younger travellers, it’s gone viral for its cyberpunk streetscapes: neon reflections, electric night markets, and the fusion of teahouse tradition with futuristic design. Chengdu has become China’s most photogenic city - where hotpot meets holograms, and where Gen Z discovers a modern, creative China.

Videos of travel vloggers on social media have surpassed one billion views, as travellers post raw, unscripted videos of high-speed rail, clean cities, and everyday warmth that contradict decades of Western caricature.

And it shows. Perceptions of China have shifted dramatically in the past two years - not just becoming “more positive,” but more "accurate". To those of us who know China, that’s the difference that matters most.

For decades, others told China’s story.

Now, millions are flying in to see it with their own eyes - discovering a nation that’s happy, orderly, ambitious, and at ease with its own pace.

100 YEARS OF NATIONAL TRAUMA: A CORE PART OF CHINA'S COLLECTIVE MEMORY

Every confident move China makes today, in trade, strategic development, and especially diplomacy, carries the echo of a century when it was powerless to protect itself.

The memory of that century shapes its leaders, its institutions, and its national psyche. Its people are reminded of it every time the national anthem is sung. 

To engage China without understanding this is to risk misreading much of its intent.
