When I was 16 years old, my therapist presented me with 5 clothespins to pick from. Each one had a word engraved on them: Love❤️, Vulnerability🌈, Freedom🕊, Courage🌸, and Authenticity⭐️. At the time I didn’t know why, but I chose the one with Freedom. 

As I got older, I had someone ask me, “What’s your dream in one word?” Instantly Freedom came to mind, and it made me realize I was on this Earth to create an impact, not just an income. When I meet someone new I always like to ask them the same question that was asked to me. To my surprise, no one ever mentioned their job as their dream, but rather love, creation, happiness, time, equality, but never their job.🍀

Society teaches us that the traditional way in life is to go to college, get a degree, and get a job, but what if that path isn’t the right route for everyone. I truly do believe that education is important, but it isn’t knowledge that is power, it is the application of knowledge that garners results. 🏆

I didn’t get any of my jobs because I had a degree from a top tier school or because I had connections, but rather it was through the power of networking🗣, persistence💪, and the best asset is the will not skill🧠. I always tell my employers during interviews that I may not have the skillsets, but I do have the mindset. You can teach me how to do the job, but you cannot teach me character, that comes straight from within. We all were once nobodies that somebody took a chance on. And I want to be that somebody for someone out there.👫

I live by the motto “If it ain’t a hell yes, it’s a hell no.”💃I don’t believe in doing anything that does not align with my core values which are passion, creativity, authenticity, vulnerability, integrity, and most importantly Freedom. I am a firm believer that money💸does not dictate how successful I am in life, but rather by how passionate and fulfilled I am in my personal and professional life doing what I love, surrounded by like-minded individuals.🧘‍♀️✨

I'm not the best at interviewing, but I am an extremely hard worker.

Most of the interviews I've been in, I was stuttering, flustered, or extremely nervous. I couldn't even get the words out at times.

I'm also not the best at being put on the spot at times with certain questions so I was never able to make it past the next round.

However when I finally got my shot in recruiting, the hiring manager did give me feedback that I would need to work on my confidence, but everything else they saw they had no doubt I wouldn't succeed.

And they were right, interviewing wasn't my strong set, but it never prevented me from excelling in my role.

And now as a recruiter, I get to see behind the scenes on feedback when it comes to offers. Primarily I've seen a lot of grace offered where hiring managers understand that candidates are not the best at interviewing, but still proceed with an offer regardless.

It is such a red flag to get an offer after 1-2 interviews.

But it is also a red flag to get no offer after 6-8 interviews either.

When I was interviewing for my next role it was between Lockheed and one other company. 

The other company had put me through 6 rounds of interviews already and had 2 more.

However Lockheed reached out in the middle of it. 

They set me up for an interview on a Friday which went well that I was advanced to the next round on Monday and got the offer on the spot and signed then and there.

I removed myself from consideration from the other company. I didn’t really want to work somewhere that couldn’t see my worth upfront and had to put me through multiple tests.

It didn’t end up being a red flag at all, because sometimes the right company won’t take 6-8 rounds to see your worth. 

Interviews don’t have to be time consuming to find an amazing candidate.

It’s ok to change careers and roles no matter how old you are.

I was a nanny for 5 years. I was a cashier for 5 months. I was a banker for 6 months. And now I’ve been a recruiter for almost 2 years.

A lot of people think that you have to be limited to only one thing in life, but even the sky has no limit. Your potential isn’t tied in what you do for a living everyday, but rather in the choices you allow yourself to have.

I’ve quit jobs after short periods of time because I felt unfulfilled and most hiring managers didn’t take me seriously and said I needed to stay in a career for at least 5 years to be successful.

I’m thankful I didn’t listen to them because choosing to stay stagnant is a choice because uncomfortability is always harder, but offers more rewards.

I feel grateful to partner with companies like

Pivoting was the best thing I ever did because it led me to multiple job increases, new skill sets, flexible work, and opportunities and experiences I never would have had if I stayed.

It’s not as glamorous as social media makes it out to be.

I’m 25 and 7 months ago after my lease ended I moved home with my parents and sleep on an air mattress in the living room and work on my parents kitchen table.

I scaled my side hustle to 6 figures while working a full time job, and made a lot of sacrifices. 

But it was the worse decision I could’ve made.

My dad is an alcoholic and at first I thought it would be ok, but then the abuse started happening again. 

He would get drunk every day and throw things at me, degrade me, call me names, threaten me, or tries to hit me if I ever stepped out of line. 

Most nights I would be staying out as late as I can or sitting in my car until he’s asleep. To say I am afraid all the time is an understatement.

A friend of mine reminded me recently that it may seem I’m “losing” money by moving out, but I’m actually gaining more by getting freedom and peace of mind. 

I’m thankful to have great friends who have taken me in these last few weeks and allowed me a safe space to get away while I start to look for my next home.

Your environment has more of an affect on your mental health than anything and you can’t create or thrive in a space where you are constantly surviving ❤️ 

Staying positive and knowing it’s temporary and that the best is yet to come 🦋

A week ago I tried to take my life.

That’s what social media doesn’t show you, the behind the scenes.

To the outside, I was just happy all the time, but so many things just kept adding up that it became unbearable. 

Depression makes everything feel empty, dark, and hopeless. And I just woke up and decided this was the last day I was going to feel like this.

I really thought the only solution was to end it so it could stop hurting. 

That’s mental health, it’s never visible externally. 

This week I'm just thankful to be alive and stopped before it became permanent. It still hurts, but it doesn’t feel so heavy with so much support from kind and caring friends who remind me they are there and I don’t have to go through it alone.

Mental health is overly stigmatized when most only show their highlight reels or only just expect you to be happy.

The outside never shows what someone is going through on the inside.

Just a reminder what you see on social media is never the full story ❤️

When I was at my last company my manager noticed.

My manager never talked to me unless it was during my 1:1 because she had trust in me to get my work done and I met my metrics every quarter.

But when I was going through depression or anxiety she noticed.

I missed meetings.

I didn’t show up to work until midday.

I was slow on email responses.

And instead of punishing me or blaming me, she called me and had a conversation with me and tried to understand what was going on.

I was honest with her that there were external things happening and it was hard to get up in the morning most days, but I’m trying the best I can.

Her approach to support me was the kindest thing I could’ve gotten from a leader.

She gave me time off to be able to take care of myself.

She checked in more frequently and asked if she could take work off my load so I could feel less stressed.

She encouraged me to take breaks and log off early.

Overall she wanted my mental health to be a priority over the job.

It helped me feel supported at work and show up as my full self as a human.

Mental health is never visible and a real leader helps you not feel so invisible ❤️

Contrary to a lot of beliefs and stigmas you don’t have to drink to have fun. 

I’m 25 and I’ve never had a drink before, what you see in my hand is a mocktail. 

I grew up with an abusive alcoholic father who drank every single day he came home from work and would take it out on me. To this day he still hasn’t changed. He would be verbally and emotionally abusive, throw things at you, and try to hurt you if you stepped out line.

That was my childhood and most of my adult life. I never wanted to be who my dad was and I never wanted to do that to my future self.

Growing up most people called me boring or tried to pressure me into drinking. At former companies they forced me to go events such as bars or parties where I would sit in the corner watching people take shot after shot.

I had a front row seat to what I didn’t want and I learned you can have fun without alcohol if not more and I found amazing friends who accept me for who I am.

Alcohol is a choice and you don’t have to drink to have a good time 🥂

After 6 months, I decided to shut down my business Creatively Quiet.

Creatively Quiet was a huge success within 6 months, it was generating 6 figures, a community that inspired multiple people, dozens of features and sponsorships, but the passion I once felt at the beginning was gone.

In losing someone very important to me that inspired me to build it, the vision of CQ changed for me. 

Something that became successful on the outside left me feeling like a failure on the inside.

And it taught me that the money didn't matter if the passion was no longer there.

I truly loved the support and the community that Creatively Quiet inspired, who followed along, allowed me to use my voice, and cheered me on.

A therapist recently told me that my value isn't tied to the things I do externally or what I am known for on the outside, but it's what on the inside that matters the most.

And I think I am ok being just Linda for a bit and discovering who she is and what she loves most.

It wasn't an easy decision to come to terms with, but I made peace that saying goodbye to the wrong things will open the door to the right things.

This isn't the end, but the beginning of something new to come.

This was me 2 years ago.

I had walked around and handed out my resume and was able to get my first offer in corporate in banking.

However 6 months in I was miserable and I made a decision to choose my mental health first and quit without anything lined up.

I was unemployed for 6 months. I would get interviews but they either labeled me as overqualified, underqualified, or a walking red flag based on my resume.

At the time I was living with my ex and even though I wasn’t working, I was paying rent and he would make a list of chores for me to do everyday while I was at work. Grocery shop, do his laundry, pick up his dry cleaning, clean the house. And if I didn’t he would punish me with silence.

So I took a job at WholeFoods while I continued looking and it was a $20k paycut but it was the happiest I was. I was able to get out of the house and it helped pay my bills. Someone didn’t care that I was overqualified. They worked around my schedule. They treated me with respect. They even cheered me on when I got my first job in recruiting and wished me well.

Now 2 years later I work as a recruiter at Lockheed Martin and I’m thankful for all the rejections and redirections that life threw me. While it wasn’t easy it taught me that no one’s career path is linear.

LinkedIn gave me a lot of opportunities but the best one was getting Travis Chen as a friend.

The last 2 weeks were the toughest it’s ever been for me with depression and anxiety and Travis was with me through it all.

He knew I was hurting and called and texted me frequently to check in, to make sure someone was thinking of me, and kept reminding me that I was never alone.

Despite the distance and busy schedules, we’ve maintain our friendship for over a year and nothing has changed. It’s one thing I never take for granted.

It was such a dark few weeks but because of friends like him, it’s brighter.

I don’t really know what I did to deserve a friend like him, but I’m thankful each and every day.

Dropping out of college was the best thing that happened to me.

After community college, when I got accepted into what I thought was my dream school, I decided to drop out and work as a nanny. 

When I was ready to get into corporate, I received 100s of rejections and had to to find different avenues to convince hiring managers to take a chance on me.

That I could and would be successful without a degree.

Flash forward I ended up in corporate making 6 figures where for years I was making minimum wage. I built a personal brand and scaled it to 6 figures in 6 months and I did it without a college degree.

I found mentors along the way like Tobi Oluwole who coached and helped me from negotiations, personal branding, and setting myself up outside of my corporate job. Tobi was one of the few people that gave me hope that it could be possible.

Degrees are one thing, but it’s the person behind it that makes a difference ❤️

Depression gets better ❤️ 

2 weeks ago I tried to take my life and it was the darkest moment I’ve experienced in years.

But in getting support from friends and therapy, there really is light if you keep holding on.

Mental health is overly stigmatized and despite all the successes I was experiencing on the outside, it was so heavy on the inside.

In the moment it never feels like life will get better or the pain will go away, but it really does, we just don’t know it in the moment.

Since the incident:
🌟 Got the biggest partnership to date from a dream company. 
🌟Invited to a mental health conference.
🌟Invited to speak at a company HQ.
🌟Getting opportunities to travel.
🌟Building a new company for mental health.

It’s not about being happy all the time, but it’s not allowing sadness to win either.

Mental health matters and you matter, don’t give up, you’re never alone ❤️ 

I hope to share these experiences about the reality of what social media doesn’t show most of us, that we’re not as alone as we think we are ❤️
