I'm Lindsay Lorusso, the CEO and co-founder of Nudnik, a sustainable fashion brand that is tackling the global waste crisis through upcycling textile waste. With my background in waste management and a deep passion for sustainability, I have dedicated myself to creating innovative solutions that transform waste into beautiful garments. Let's face the harsh reality: the rise of fast fashion has resulted in an alarming amount of pre-consumer textile waste, enough to clothe the world's population two times over. However, upcycling textile scraps, which typically end up in landfills, has proven to be a time- and labor-intensive process. That's where Nudnik comes in. We saw the opportunity and the urgent need to make upcycling a viable and scalable solution. At Nudnik, we focus on upcycling rather than recycling textiles because it is far less wasteful. By using waste as is, without adding water and energy to process it into something new, we minimize our environmental impact. In fact, upcycled textiles surpass even eco-friendly options like organic cotton when it comes to carbon cost. It's a win-win for both fashion and the planet. To make upcycling at scale a reality, we developed specialized software that revolutionizes our production process. This game-changing technology cuts the timeline from raw inventory to production-ready tech packs from weeks to minutes. It serves as both an inventory-management tool and design aid, allowing us to create consistent and replicable designs suitable for larger-scale production. Our breakthrough tech, combined with clever workarounds, has paved the way for exciting possibilities at Nudnik. While we initially focused exclusively on children's clothing, our success has propelled us to expand our product range to include clothes for adults. But our vision doesn't stop there. With the success we've achieved at Nudnik, I am now looking to work with other brands to unlock further circularity and carbon reduction through my upcycling process. Together, we can make a greater impact and drive meaningful change across the fashion industry. Our journey has been recognized through participation in the NEXT Canada’s Next Founders program in 2018, selection for Desjardins Good Spark Program (2019), winning PayPal's Pitch Competition (2018), and being a finalist for the BMO Celebrating Women Grant Program. Moreover, we were recognized as a leading Changemaker in the Changemaker Initiative with Startup Canada (2020) and one of 50 Changemakers for The Report on Business and the Globe & Mail (2023).
