Over the last twenty years, I've been a lawyer, law professor, and director of an academic success/bar preparation department at an ABA law school. During that time, I observed a crucial gap in legal education: we don’t teach law students how to learn the law. Instead of offering a step-by-step system for learning every topic, students are taught random study skills throughout the semester. As a result, they don't always connect the dots or see the framework of each topic, and are forced to learn through trial and error. To fill this gap, I wanted to offer an approach to learning in one all-inclusive system. I wanted to give more than my opinion (because that won’t work for everyone), so I conducted a qualitative phenomenological study with successful law students to uncover the systems they employ to learn class topics and achieve their academic goals. I combined their collective study steps into one comprehensive system and published it in my book, Nine Steps to Law School Success: A Scientifically Proven Study Process for Success in Law School. In 2020, I founded the Law School Success Institute and created my flagship course, The Law School Operating System, which I updated in 2025 after a second qualitative study with over 250 law students to ensure it provides the most relevant and current strategies for success.
