Nobody tells you this about job hunting:

I found my dream role by applying to 0 jobs online.

Instead, over 3 months I:

Hosted 12 events in a new city

- Female Founders Morning Coffee/Brunch
- Women's Health Walk in the Park  
- International Women's Day Event for Female Founders & VCs
(I got very specific and picked a niche (women's health at the time). This helped me build my community and brand quickly.)

Attended min 3 events per week

I searched on Luma (filtering for SF), looked for conferences, and even got flown out to moderate a panel in San Diego (story for another time!).

Had 60+ coffee chats

LinkedIn was my best friend. Every day I had a role, I had to connect with 10 new people (minimum) in spaces I was passionate about, sending thoughtful messages with the intention of building real relationships. 

I always suggested we go for a walk - something unique to SF that so many people were down for! I prioritized in-person meetings even if it meant running around the city all day. at least I got my steps in!

Why? I leaned into my strength: people.

I knew I wanted something unconventional. I needed someone to take a chance on me, which meant taking a chance on myself first.

Here's what I learned:

The online application game is broken. My friends in recruiting tell me that AI bots flood postings with noise the second they go live. Your thoughtful application gets buried... :( 

So I borrowed a skill from my time in Sales: multi-threading.

When you're closing an enterprise deal, you talk to every stakeholder who could influence it. Job hunting should work the same way:

- Connect directly with the hiring manager  
- Network with people at the company  
- If a friend works there, ask for a referral  
- Give something valuable to the person hiring  
- Host events that position you as a connector, people will start reaching out to you

The mindset shift that changed everything:

As a founder, I learned: if I look for reasons NOT to do something, I'll find them. If I look for reasons TO do it, I'll find those instead.

When I quit my job and bought a ticket to SF, everyone said the timing was terrible. new administration, economy tanking, visa threats everywhere...

But I was surrounded by other Canadians who'd made the same move. My dad's voice in my head: "If they can do it, so can you."

Three months later, I had multiple offers - including from companies I hadn't even reached out to. 

Focus on what you want, not what you're avoiding.

What happens when three content creators walk into a room together?

They host a panel about B2B content, OBVIOUSLY! 💁‍♀️

And in case you think we don't know ball.. we had: 
- Heike Young Head of content 2x, Microsoft and Salesforce
- Devin Reed Head of content 2x, Gong and Clari
- Elaine Zelby Founder-led content, Tofu 

These three LIT UP LA TECH WEEK by a16z, gathering a room full of marketers to tackle the big question: where are we using AI in content, and where should we keep our human hands firmly on the wheel?

Here's what will always need a human: The ideas. The POV. The strategy.

And what we're happy to hand off to AI (mostly the boring stuff): Keeping tone of voice consistent across the company. Adding guardrails that legal, PR, and comms would flag anyway + the fun stuff of having AI be a thought partner. 

Some golden nuggets from the panel: ✨ 

Heike shared a reality check, most marketers never get enough support from data teams. So she uses AI to crunch data and visualize trends. The key? Don't trust individual AI outputs as absolute truth, but DO use it to spot patterns and see the bigger picture.

Elaine dropped that personalization is SO last year. It's all about contextualization now. Not the basic "Hi [First Name] at [Company]" stuff, we’re talking about mapping your value prop to their specific pain point, industry, and role. Nearly impossible to do manually at scale, but AI? That's where it shines!! 

Devin had me saying "PREACH" for this one: everyone wants to "scale content," but... what are you actually trying to scale? Do you have a POV so strong it deserves to be everywhere? Maybe. But probably not atm? In an age where everything's scalable, take time to figure out what's actually worth scaling.

Here's the thing:

I've been in so many rooms where we feel scared about about AI replacing marketing/content roles. But the reality is FAR from that. It’s truly a union and partnership between both. Because the reality? If you remove the human and just prompt AI, you get generic garbage.

The secret is using AI as a thought partner, ask it to:
- Poke holes in this idea
- What perspectives am I missing?
- How would the top 1% of marketers approach this?
(Fun tip from Heike: She prompts AI for content ideas... and makes sure NOT to do those 😂)

How my brain likes to think of it: 

Think of content creation like a river. The human is the river itself, flowing with ideas, energy, and POV. AI is the riverbed, creating the boundaries and constraints you and your company need to flow.

They both need each other to be a river. 💙
