One of the most common ways consultants lose deals?

This morning, I kicked off my 4-day virtual Corporate Consulting Intensive. 

I’m guiding a group of experts through my entire 300 page playbook

Over the years, as much as I've tried to ignore it-
I tend to get commentary on my looks.

Figured I'd finally lean into it...

A client said exactly this to me on a coaching call this past week.
Here’s what I helped her see:

This isn’t because there isn’t demand anywhere.
It’s because she hadn’t made a strategic decision about where demand should come from.

So she was showing up everywhere.
Different rooms.
Different industries.
Different buyers.
Different problems.

None of those ecosystems overlapped.
So her name never compounded anywhere.

She stayed busy doing all the things.
But traction never built.

That’s not a lead problem.
It’s a POND problem.

Real markets form when the same ecosystem of buyers keeps hearing your name.
In the same circles.
Around the same problems.

That’s when something starts to shift.

You spend less time chasing opportunities…
and more time responding to interest.

One of the hardest transitions for experts as their business grows is this:
Learning to stop asking,
“How can I make this work?”

and instead, to start asking,
“Is this actually worthy of my brand?”

Not every opportunity is a good opportunity.
Some are underfunded.
Some are unclear.
Some are exciting on paper but expensive in reality.
Some ask for serious expertise with a lightweight budget.

Early on in business, the question is:
"Can I do this work well?"

Once you find traction, the question becomes:
"Should I do this work at all?"

That is a different question.
And it requires a different identity.

Eventually you realize:
You are no longer trying to prove your value ...
you are deciding where your value belongs.

One reason experts underprice is not because they lack value.
It is because they lack oxygen.

When your pipeline is thin, every opportunity feels loaded.
Every inquiry feels urgent.
Every budget feels like something you should “try to make work.”

But when your pipeline is healthy, your posture changes.
You can ask better questions.
You can hold the line.
You can slow down.
You can negotiate from strength.

A full pipeline does more than create revenue.
It protects your standards.

That is one of the most underrated benefits of strategic marketing
and investing in growing your sales skillset.
