Going to start the week by putting the hard word on anyone who needs to hear this. How’s your case study game you delicious, smart human? Cos I’ve been auditing consultant sites lately, and hoo boy, a lot of people are missing a trick when it comes to case studies.
 
That starts with the basics. 
 
A lot (like a LOT) of consultants and coaches don’t seem to know what a case study is.
 
A case study is not:

· Your thoughts on a project.
· Some pretty pictures of your project. 
· You tugging your noodle about how excellent your project was.
 
Don’t get me wrong, those are three valid types of content. Well, maybe not that last one, because it makes you look like a pillock … however the other two, yes. 
 
But they are not a case study. 
 
Thing is, a lot of consultants and coaches are calling them case studies and breaching the case study trade descriptions act, and lemme tell you, that industry body’s lawyers are savage, and you DO NOT want to get on their wrong side. 
 
I kid obviously. But the general lack of comprehension of what a case study is, and why they matter, makes me sad because they are absolute new business weapons, and if you are not using them to your advantage, you are missing out. 
 
Case studies are a new business triple banger. They combine social proof, with storytelling, with insights tailored to evoke interest from your ideal client. We are all curious (nosy) monkeys, and we can’t resist a story about a business like ours.
 
That’s why case studies go so hard. But what are they?
 
For a case study to be worth the name case study, you need three elements.

1. Story. 
2. Your client’s perspective.
3. A valuable insight for your ideal client. 
 
The combination of those three factors is what makes case studies so powerful. 
 
Story makes case studies compelling. Sorry mate, but nobody wants to read a case study spilt into three sections entitled problem, solution, results. That’s a guaranteed zero fun time. 
 
Your client’s perspective makes your case study credible. You can bash on about how epic your project was all day, and it’ll lack credibility because of course you’re going to say you’re awesome. One good testimonial from your client outweighs miles of your own waffle. But a few pages of pertinent insights from your client? Now you’re talking new business gold.
 
Insights make your case study worth reading. Any marketing content you create, ask yourself, what’s in this for my client? Why would they give it their valuable time? Insights from your ideal clients’ competitors are pretty much the juiciest thing you can share, so make sure you extract those insights and share  them with the world.
 
So how IS your case study game?

I remember when I found out the Māori word for placenta and land are the same and thinking of course it is. Of course. Because we are as rooted in our native land as we are in our ancestral DNA, perhaps more so. 

Our land is fundamental to our survival. We cannot exist if our planet’s conditions become hostile to life. Yet our land has never been more beleaguered and under threat than it is now. 

And right now, the Fast-Track Bill the government is proposing will strip our remaining wild places of the protections they have, for nothing but short-term greed. 

This Bill stands only to benefit a small subset of business interests.
 
It damages other business interests, particularly tourism and our export industries, including primary sector agricultural exports. Any industry that relies wholly or partly on the strength of Brand New Zealand and our reputation as a clean, green country will be damaged by this Bill. 

The businesses most likely to benefit from this Bill are international mining interests. This means the bulk of the revenue generated by pillaging our remaining natural treasures will go offshore and will not benefit our local economy. 

Of course, the business arguments against this Fast-Track Bill are only a small part of why this bill is so wrong. But this is LinkedIn and I’m throwing the algorithm a bone. 

You have until Friday to submit on this bill. 

There are a few ways to do this.

You can submit through parliament.

You can submit through Greenpeace, and they make it easy with a pre-worded letter you can edit and add an intro to.
