I spent 6 years in prison. 🟫

(Between the ages of 22 and 28.)

There were no bars. No guards. Just a cell I built myself. Brick by brick, thought by thought.

Every "well done" felt like borrowed praise. 
Every success, a countdown to exposure.

So I worked harder. Smiled wider. Said yes too often. 

I told myself it was humility. Or that it was "drive". 
But humility doesn't 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘬𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦. Drive doesn't 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭.

What I carried was basically fear - disguised as discipline.
The world saw confidence. Inside, I was running an endless audit of my own self worth.

Marcus Garvey wrote: "If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life." 
I was losing both races: the one in my head, and the one in the world.

Then came one conversation that changed everything.
My mum asked me this: "When will you finally start living for purpose instead of dying in the prison of your mind?"

That question cracked something open.
I'd been so busy trying to prove my worth, I'd forgotten I already had it. 

That worth is the ground you stand on. 

When I began to live from that truth, the walls didn't crumble all at once. But they softened. 
They made space for faith, for peace.

That shift changed everything: how I led myself, how I led others... 
I took bigger risks, and showed up in rooms that once terrified me.

Stopped performing. Started contributing.

Khalil Gibran wrote:
"Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his twin brother."

For 6 years, I lived with the pain of self doubt. Now, I live with the brother.

Every cut is deliberate. 
Every pattern signals exactly what this bread will become.

𝘐𝘵'𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.

Brings to mind a recent conversation with a leadership coach, who told me this:
"I've posted for 17 months now. No traction. I'm just wasting my time on LinkedIn."

I checked out her profile.
Headline: "Empowering leaders to unlock their potential."

Then she told me about what she actually does: "I work with new VPs who just inherited a broken team, half want to quit, performance reviews are 8 months overdue, and they're terrified to have the hard conversations."

I asked: "Why isn't 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 reflected in your headline?"

Silence.

Problem:

Generic = invisible. Specific = "Wow, that's us..."

Her ideal client isn't searching for "unlocking leadership potential". They're lying awake thinking things like: "My best person just resigned and I don't know why;" "I inherited a team of leaders that can't stand each other;" "I have 90 days to turn this around."

Her message needed to signal an understanding of that context.

Not: "Leadership development for senior leaders" But: "I coach new VPs through their first 90 days with a broken team..."

That coach rewrote her entire profile page to reflect her new positioning.

10 days later: two discovery calls with the exact people she wanted to work with.

All because she put the right signals in place.

Most L&D consultants I speak with are stuck in the same LinkedIn trap.
And they don’t realise it. 🟤

They’re showcasing the depth and breadth of their expertise. They're sharing frameworks, credentials, knowledge.

And they’re getting applause. From peers.

That’s fine - if the goal is to reach only peers.
But in most cases, it’s not.

They want to reach decision-makers.
The ones who might hold the budget… or at least the pressure.

And those same decision-makers are scrolling past, thinking:
 “Impressive… but how does this actually help us right now?”
 “Sounds a lot like the last 100 consultants we tried.”
 “Smart… just not specific enough to our organisation.”

Here’s the disconnect:
L&Ds on LinkedIn are aiming for credibility. Gravitas.
Decision-makers are looking for certainty. (I know, right?!)

Their reality sounds more like this:
“We’re restructuring, integrating AI, shifting entire workflows.
 If this change fails, we lose good people. Burn out the rest. More resignations.
 And we'll have wasted six figures in strategy that never stuck.”

Empowered buyers don’t need more information.
They need their priorities named, understood.
Their current approach challenged.
A compelling POV presented.

They’re also trying to avoid becoming the cautionary tale and are searching for someone who has what it takes to meet this need.

Someone who understands the stakes.
Who can reframe the problem so clearly that it creates desire for a new way (before any offer is made).

At their level, they’re not asking:
 “Who sounds clever?”

They’re asking:
 “Who sees where and why we’re stuck?”
 “Who gets the pressure we’re under?”
 “Who can show us how to fix it without derailing everything else?”

You don’t win their attention by being impressive but by showing you understand the pressure they’re under.

And by becoming the only logical match for their problem.

And, no, this isn't some act of self harm.

You clicked on a statement that's meaningless. I made it up. 
Let's chat about that.

It does my head in when I see people weaponising FOMO about AI taking all sorts of jobs 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘺 to drive clicks, programme sales and anxiety spirals.

The usual pattern:
"AI writes better than 90% of copywriters already..." 
"If you're still writing landing pages manually, you're done..."

Ugh. I'm busier than ever, as it happens.

Look, some of these people make decent points. But the existential dread hooks like these can evoke is totally unwarranted.

A few thoughts:

1️⃣ 𝐍𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭  𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐲
Predictions I've read in the past:
- Augmented reality glasses would be everywhere by now. Google Glass flopped.
- Fully autonomous cars would be common by 2025. Are they 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘯?
- Remote work would completely replace office life after the Covid pandemic (hybrid models have become the norm instead). 
- Predictions from the 2000s that television and traditional media would lose relevance proved wrong; streaming and online video have revitalised rather than replaced the medium.

The only prediction you can bank on is that the future won't look like what anyone expects.

2️⃣ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫 (𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫)
"AI has improved THIS much in 18 months, imagine where it'll be in 3 years!"
This is a bit like saying "This startup grew 300% last quarter, so they'll own the entire market by next year!"

3️⃣ 𝐍𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐌𝐔𝐂𝐇 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬
Copywriting isn't about merely arranging words. Neither is messaging. Both require an understanding of the space between what someone believes now and what they need to believe to act.

AI can generate sentences. It cannot:
- Sense when a client says yes but actually means no
- Know 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 audience will bristle at "transform" but respond to "fix"
- Understand the real objection isn't price but the fear of being seen trying

These aren't skills you can simply prompt into existence.

I'm obviously not saying NOTHING will change. I am saying be skeptical of people who claim they have certainty of the future, 𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 when their "certainty" is to scare you into buying a programme they're flogging.

Things will unfold in ways none of us expect. We'll adapt. As humans, we always do.

Repetition won't make people tune out your message. It makes them believe it. I'll prove it. 🟫

I’ve walked past this blue plaque 100 times, but I hadn’t paid much attention to it.

Until this happened:
I was watching 𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘞𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘉𝘦 𝘢 𝘔𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘦, and the name Tony Meehan popped into my head like a reflex - it was the answer to a question about the band he founded. 𝘞𝘰𝘰𝘩𝘰𝘰! 

(I'm honestly so bad at quizzes I was genuinely ecstatic.)

The plaque honours him as a founding member of The Shadows.
(He lived in flat 34 from 1977 to 2005.)

But here’s the weird part: I hadn’t really noticed the plaque.

I’d just 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘯 it.

That’s the power of repetition, and its lesser-known cousin, latent memory.

We underestimate how much our brains absorb in the background. Even if you don’t consciously register the ad, the message, the name... it’s going in.

And when it matters, it resurfaces.

This little episode reminded me that messaging isn’t a one-and-done thing. Yes, it can feel like shouting into the void. But repetition builds trust. And recall. And brand fluency (where “I’ve heard of them” becomes “I believe them").

The real danger is in not repeating yourself enough.

14 months ago, I rejoined LinkedIn after a 20-year absence. 🟫
500 followers. No strategy. 2 fingers crossed.

2 weeks ago, I learned I’m now:
- ranked #2 for copywriting and content marketing on Favikon
- in the top 1% of LinkedIn creators globally

I’m a “top creator” in the same way someone who jogs twice a month is technically an athlete.

Do these rankings matter?
Honestly: less than you think.

Here’s what's 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 meaningful to me:
- 80 per cent of my writing business now comes from inbound leads
- I’ve worked with a Pulitzer winner, 7-figure founders, and advisers to the UK government
- My income has grown because of this platform
- My thinking has sharpened because of this platform

None of this was obvious when I was posting about green smoothies and "best writing tools" in month 1.

Recognition, in general, matters because it reduces doubt for people who buy outcomes, not promises.

Think of it like choosing where to eat: given a choice, you’ll pick the Michelin-starred restaurant over the unknown one.

It’s a trust shortcut - helpful, but temporary.

Rankings change.
Algorithms change.
Audiences change.

The work sticks.
The relationships stick.
The results stick.

Most buyers don’t care about rankings.
They care about whether you can:
- communicate clearly
- think under pressure
- make their world tangibly better

If you’re building something here, focus less on the scoreboard and more on the people who make you better, sharper.

Everything else sorts itself out.
