In February 2022, I left my job as a 1% wage earner. I had caught what I chased: The C-Suite office. Pay. Travel. Image … Most think I left unhappy; I’m smarter than that. What I did was harder. I left something wonderful. I left a place that I helped to build, and I left a place that helped build me. You are reading this because you’re wrestling with something. You won’t comment or “like” anything on my page, because you don’t want anyone to know how you feel and what you’re thinking. Dude, I get it. Not long ago, that was me. As you wrestle, know this: Leaving your job does not require that you first come to dislike it. It does require you to have a more extraordinary dream inside of you that deserves your pursuit. It requires a desire to test yourself on your own merits, and it requires insane courage to trade what you’ve already created for something you can’t even articulate. BUT know this: The friendships you’ve made along the way are portable; they don’t end when the paycheck does. The skills you’ve gained will be there the moment you need them. The people you thought were deal friends may turn out to be become your real friends. You will discover hundreds of people just like you - all shamefully tolerating the same yesterday. You will suddenly have time to have deeper conversations with people you admire. And you will learn they need these conversations as much as you. You will wake up each morning with time to yourself to work on the things that are calling you. And you will eventually be free of the things that used to stress you. People will admire you for owning your clock, and they will want to talk about it. It will be hard for them not to feel some sort of quiet envy. You will be in a hurry to do “what’s next,” but that hurrying is dangerous…it’s too easy to slip into something near what it is you used to have. New stress will find you … like why is my calendar is so empty? Yes, truly, that will be an actual stressor in your life. Dude, look … If you wait until you’re unhappy to leave, you’ve already done it wrong. But if you’ve got something burning in you, especially if you don’t know what it is, but you know it’s there, we should connect. When you’re ready to leave something you love to pursue something more, you’re prepared to take the steps I took. I'm a Certified Executive Coach and former public company executive who now helps leaders get clarity on the change they want in life. I help build roadmaps for your second-half story. Welcome to your Normal 40 highway, boss. The best days are in the windshield.
