La dicotomia tra «scelte facili, vita difficile» e «scelte difficili, vita facile» mi è molto cara.

Io sono solitamente un «maratoneta», ma mi sorge una questione: come bilanciare il tempo da investire nel nostro sviluppo personale e professionale con la realtà ineludibile delle esigenze finanziarie immediate, anche di risparmio?

L'investimento in educazione e carriera —dalla scuola all'università, passando per un MBA e gli anni di « gavetta »— mi sembra essere quella «difficile» che promette una vita « più facile » o, quantomeno, più soddisfacente.

È sicuramente una strada che richiede tempo e risorse, talvolta ritardando significativamente il momento in cui si può iniziare a pensare effettivamente al risparmio e alla costruzione di un fondo pensionistico.

Però, se uno inizia a risparmiare a 20 anni anziché a 40, ciò porta una differenza sostanziale nel beneficio cumulativo; quindi, dobbiamo chiederci: le scelte di sviluppo a lungo termine compensano adeguatamente il ritardo nel risparmio?
La questione, purtroppo, non è solo di calcoli finanziari, ma di valori, priorità e visione di vita.

La decisione di intraprendere il percorso lungo, di formazione e crescita professionale, considera non solo il ritorno economico, ma anche il valore intrinseco dello sviluppo personale e dell'arricchimento che deriva dall'apprendimento continuo e dall'affrontare sfide impegnative.

Gary Warmer's stark observation – « This is an Account Takeover Heaven if you don't have the right controls in place! » – underscores a critical vulnerability that extends beyond the immediate data breach scenario.

It is imperative for providers to move beyond a reliance on simple verification details for account resets and adopt more sophisticated authentication methods. While this may cause some minor inconvenience to users, it is an undeniable step towards enhancing security measures.

I had been asked by a couple folks to look at the AT&T Data leak and my first reaction was "eh, another data leak."  Yes, the data contains in plain text the user name, their presumably AT&T phone numbers, a mailing address, and an email account.  That's bad.  I ran a few data extracts.  There are 597,482 email addresses that have a ".edu" email address.  I was curious about duplicates, so I selected one University.  It had around 3,300 records that contained their school's email domain. Of those, 630 were duplicates by email address, with the highest having 5 records that had the same email address.  

In the copy of the data that we had, there was another table, called "DOB1." 
The hackers had basically figured out the algorithm that was used to encrypt birthdays and encoded every possible birthday and then created a table of all of the birthdates that were in the table as pairs of encrypted value:decrypted value.  Then I realized what the OTHER unique table was. 

The other table is called "PRODUCTION" and contains data pairs that look like this:

In years gone by, when most of my peers would have been getting social security numbers, the first three digits or your SSN was an indicator of what state the number was issued in.  I pulled a list of "Birmingham, Alabama" records and checked their SSNs by looking up the encoded value in the data.  Almost all of them started with "Alabama prefixes" (which were numbers from 416 to 424) confirming to me that this value is definitely a table of SSNs.  

There are 43,989,217 SSNs in that table.  And by merging them with the main table, we now have: 

Name
SSN
Telephone
Street address (house number, street, city, state, zip) 
Date of Birth
Email account

The AT&T Data breach just became the most important data breach of the decade, In My Humble Opinion. There have been bigger breaches with PII, but this one is unique, I believe, in that it is freely available and already widely downloaded.

What do we need to do? 

Do you have a process for a customer to reclaim their online account? 
Does that process involve any of those fields being part of their proof of identity?  This is an Account Takeover Heaven if you don't have the right controls in place!
