I’ve always considered myself a creative person. From the time I was little, whether it was building with LEGO, moulding with Play-Doh, doing arts and crafts, or drawing the world around me, creativity has been at the core of my favourite activities. As I got older, that creative fire continued to burn, and realizing that I wouldn’t be a kid forever, I reluctantly started thinking about what I might like to do for my career. A huge question for anyone, but an important one nonetheless. Eventually, it was time to choose something to study in university. I loved to build, I was doing well in math and science - all the signs were pointing towards engineering. So, after a rigorous application process and 5 arduous years of work and study, I obtained my degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Toronto, achieving High Honours. I also earned a double minor in Bioengineering and Engineering Business. This gave me the opportunity to kindle my fascination with the inner workings of the human body, which I developed as part of my 10+ year weightlifting journey, while also gaining the soft skills to be able to market myself and make a living regardless of my specific career path. Now yes, engineering involves tons of math and science, equations and calculations, and seemingly never ending report writing. But distilling it all down, it becomes clear that engineering is about problem solving, and more broadly, about learning to think differently. Rather than prioritizing memorization, engineers focus on understanding, using our existing knowledge and experience, combined with creativity, to solve new problems that we’ve never faced before. Through my work, education, and volunteer experiences so far, I’ve been able to develop an ever-growing problem-solving toolbelt, and I know that, no matter what challenge I’m faced with along my journey, I’ll either have the right tool for the job, or, I’ll create one.
