Having started my career in an owner-manager firm over 12 years ago, I've seen first-hand how the accounting world has changed dramatically in the last decade, and the fast-paced digital revolution shows no signs of slowing down. I take great satisfaction in using technology to turn those everyday problems into solutions, and our ecosystem has no shortage of exciting companies that will continue to positively change our sector for years to come 🧪💻 I am passionate about streamlining processes, optimising performance, and solving complex challenges in an industry I stumbled into via administration apprenticeship, which if I’m being honest, was a complete accident! But I wouldn’t change it for the world 🌍

What another absolute belter of a week 🚀 I peeled away before things got too silly last night 😆 but a 7am airport Uber wasn’t exactly the most welcome alarm 🚗 It’s not just the pace of technology in this industry that continues to amaze me, it’s also how quickly vendors and industry partners are coming together to try and help accounting firms navigate the next few years of change and uncertainty 👊🏽 Having had the privilege of spending the best part of a week with some of the very best in the game, I’m more confident than ever that the vendor community will keep leading the charge in best in class development and adoption, making life for accountants simpler, smoother and easier 💡 I stand by my view that the pace of change ahead is steep, and I think I did a decent job this week of arguing why partners like The Modern Firm™ can truly help both the vendor and accounting communities tackle the impending tidal wave. The future’s bright for those ready to embrace it 🔥 Should probably consider a quick power nap on this plane ✈️ straight onto Cardiff tonight to round off the week in style. I’ll save the tedious links between an Oasis reunion and the accountancy industry for Monday. Until next time, Lisbon 👊🏽 🦅 Alex Falcon Huerta Emma Crawford-Falekaono Zoe Lacey-Cooper Richard Sergeant Rishi Ruparelia Callum Macrae Gareth Salomon Carl Reader Julie Sinsbury Adam Clarke Jonathan Gaunt Vipul Sheth

One of the main driving forces behind launching The Modern Firm™ was to help UK accounting firms navigate challenges around technology enablement ⚙️ I’ve spoken many times over the last few months about the sheer volume of choice in the market and with all the will in the world it’s impossible for most firms to cut through the noise 🎯 When launching the business I made a very real and genuine promise to myself. I wanted to remain unbiased and agnostic when it came to software and tech in the space. And my view was that commercial kickbacks or commissions would ultimately dilute the core message I was trying to get across. And that message was simple: to be a truly impartial voice of reason for the firms I’m working with 💬 Remaining true to those principles has been key so far (and will continue to be) in acting as a trusted partner to both firms and vendors alike. All of that said, good software is good software. Good vendors are good vendors 🤝 And while my stance on impartiality is still crystal clear I’m keen to start showcasing the real tech that will help firms not just survive but thrive in this new era of digital adoption 🚀 It feels only fitting to kick that off by resharing last week’s partnership announcement by the team at XBert. Will’s a pretty cool bloke, although the reasons behind wanting to formalise a partnership with XBert go way beyond his ability to navigate the Accountex after party scene 🍻 Many of the firms I’ve been working with recently will have heard me preaching about the benefits XBert could bring to their practice. And after 12+ months of getting to know the product I remain convinced that most UK firms could benefit from having XBert in their tech stack. You can read more about why we both think a formal partnership makes so much sense. Interested in how tools like XBert could help your firm but don’t have the time or capacity to implement them? We should chat 👇🏽

Wow. Noel & Liam 👏🏽 I fully forgive TicketMaster and Oasis for those outrageously inflated ticket prices and the virtual queues that broke the internet last year. That was a gig (and a week 😁) to remember. Anyway TMF does Portugal, done ✅ followed by a relaxing-ish weekend spent socialising with my forever tolerant and supportive family. But we’re back on the road today 🚂 Very excited for the long trip up North this afternoon for a week of workshops with the latest client, who’s about to kick off one of The Modern Firm™ Ops Unlocked projects. Yes it’s another week of Premier Inns, but we’re set to extract some serious value from these sessions and put this firm firmly on a path to a technology enabled future. Touching back down in Cheltenham Thursday night for our accounting round table dinner, proudly hosted in partnership with AppVentory More on that Thursday 😁 Should really start using this new office we’re now paying for at some point…

I think I must be the only person in the world who’s never been to Lisbon 😅 At least that’s how it’s felt these past few weeks as I’ve had more restaurant, sightseeing and bar recommendations than I can count (appreciated every single one of them 😘). I was half expecting it to be overhyped, but everyone was right and I was wrong (rare, but it does happen). Dinner last night set the tone perfectly for the week ahead. An evening of great food and even better company Richard Sergeant Carl Reader 👏🏽 I’m escaping the heat this morning and nailing a few calls in my apartment before I head out on a mission as I promised my daughter I’d find her a toy dinosaur 🦖 One of the more random requests she’s ever thrown at me, but if anyone knows where to find toy dinosaurs in Lisbon, send me your tips 😂 Then we do it all again tonight. Bigger crowd. Bigger conversations. Bigger tapas.

Two of my very real core values have always been and will always be transparency and integrity. I’ve never been one for playing things too close to my chest. I’ve always found that being open, honest and occasionally a bit vulnerable tends to go a lot further than pretending to have all the answers ✅ That approach has landed me in some awkward moments over the years (a few stories I probably won’t share here 😂) but professionally it’s served me pretty well. Over the past few months, I’ve had a lot of conversations about the future of The Modern Firm™ short term goals, long term ambitions, and some big questions about growth and scale 📈 I’ve approached every one of them with the same mindset: honesty, curiosity, and a very open mind. I think in a world where so many people keep their cards so close I think there’s huge value in just putting yours on the table. You can buy a lot of things in business. But openness and integrity? You either have that or you don’t. And often the most valuable things are the ones money can’t buy.

Back to the real world this week 🛬 I don’t think I could ever be one of these digital nomads. I was able to stay connected last week but let’s be honest there are far too many distractions when you’re abroad 😂 I’ve never been someone who can return from holiday to an overflowing inbox, that kind of chaos just stresses me out 😵‍💫 But either way having the team in Sri Lanka keeping the cogs turning made all the difference last week. Good people, wherever they’re based, are going to play a massive role in the future of this industry. And last week only validated that long standing belief even more 🌍 Chamara, Shalini 👏🏽 I’ve kept today light so I can crack on with a few key client projects ✍️ The rest of the week isn’t shaping up quite so kindly 😅
Although I’ve somehow managed to bag 3 meetings over lunch in Cheltenham this week. All three will be great, but Thursday’s might just help shape the future of our UK team. And no guesses where we’ll be eating. 😎

What’s the next best thing than being nominated for an award? Being asked to sponsor one 😂 Proud to share that The Modern Firm™ is an official category partner for the 2025 SoGlos - Gloucestershire's leading media brand Business Awards sponsoring the Customer Excellence Award 🏆 Not bad going for a business that only officially launched in March 😁 But for me this just makes sense. We set up The Modern Firm™ to help accountants modernise how they work, with better systems, better data, and better outcomes for the people they serve. So backing this award in particular feels like the perfect fit. And as I’ve said numerous times now, there’s never been a more exciting (or more important) time to build something bold in Gloucestershire. Cheltenham’s evolving fast. The MX & Golden Valley 🚀 and a thriving cyber + startup ecosystem to name but a few things 🧠 It’s turning into one of the UK’s most innovative regions but if local accountancy firms want to stay relevant and resilient they need to lean into that shift, not run from it. The digital age is here. And I genuinely believe firms in our region should be leading the charge 💥 Look forward to judging some of the brilliant entries and then celebrating the people who are raising the bar in the region 👏

                23

Back to London this morning for a few days of good conversations and hopefully a bunch of new ideas and insights 🚂 I’ll be at the Digital Accountancy Show’s AI Summit on Thursday deep diving into all the latest on where AI is heading in our industry 🚀 A full day of workshops (where I’ll just sitting and learning 🤓) will be a welcome change. Before that I’m with the Acting Office team this morning whislt we spend some more time getting deeper on their innovative, exciting and ever evolving product 🧪 It’s then a quick trip up the Heron Tower for lunch with a view with my long time friend and mentor in all but name, Asif. It’s been a good few years now since our Acclivity chapter and a lot has changed in that time inclduing new tech, new trends and new ways of working. But what hasn’t changed is a shared belief that technology can (and should) fundamentally make work better for people ✅ It’s always cool just chatting with someone who gets that intrinsically, and I’m sure we’ll cover a lot of ground in just a few hours. Can I tempt anyone around Liverpoool Street for a catch up after work? I promise no AI or accounting chat. Unless you want to. I’m an easy guy…

                  19

As I mentioned last week when I launched The Modern Firm™ I made a promise to stay impartial, agnostic and always on the side of what works best for accounting firms 👊🏽 That meant no commercial bias. No commissions. Just clarity. But as I also said last week, good software is good software, and good vendors are worth shouting about 📣 So following on from our recent XBert announcement, I’m excited to share a second strategic partnership that’s been in the works for a while now. We’ve officially teamed up with the brilliant team over at Bots For That to help firms take automation and AI from buzzwords to actual business transformation 🧠 I’ve spent the last several months now watching their product evolve and more importantly watching the impact it’s had on real firms doing real work. Our goal with this partnership is to deliver tech enabled change that’s practical, scalable, and genuinely useful to the people using it day to day. And I think most firms that I’ve talked to recently about the art of possible with RPA & AI Agents are truly blown away. This is ultimitlaey a shared mission to modernise how work gets done in accounting practices across the UK ✅ I’ll link the full press release below 👇🏽 Keen to explore how automation could work in your firm, but don’t know where to start? Let’s chat 📥

I always enjoy getting stuck into these kick off projects with clients, and even better when they’re such a progressive, forward thinking bunch. We’ve just started a week of deep dive sessions with another accountancy firm that’s grown fast, both organically and through M&A. And no real surprises, as some familiar themes are already surfacing Ones we see right across the industry. 🧩 Yes M&A drives growth, but it also adds complexity
↳ Deals boost the numbers, but often leave behind fragmented workflows, patchy pricing models and pockets of different cultures. Standardising “how we do things” is just as crucial as landing the next acquisition. 📊 Data is everywhere… and nowhere.
↳ Dashboards? Lots. Reports? Plenty. A clear, joined up view of WIP, clients or team capacity? Still elusive. Spreadsheets remain the glue (or the sticking point) for everything from tax to internal finance. 🤝 Client onboarding & engagement still heavily manual.
↳ Inconsistent engagement letters, manual KYC, rekeyed data, most teams want a slick experience but lack the systems or playbook to guarantee it. And there’s always a caution against “over automating,” to keep relationships personal. 💡 The big unlock for any firm? A playbook + smart tech.
↳ The appetite is always there to build a firm wide playbook that locks in quality and consistency, then layer in tech to protect margin and scale. Firms that crack this will be best placed to grow sustainably, especially in a market demanding more from less. 👉 If you’re leading an accounting or advisory firm, where’s your biggest operational frustration right now? Data, people, processes, or tech? Let’s go Day 2 🚀

                      13

This week’s been the exact reset I needed ✅ I might have only formaly launched this business in March, but the first 3 months (and frankly the 6 months before that) have been intense. I’ve always backed myself, maybe a bit too much at times 😅 And whilst plenty have people have told me that’s a bit naive 😂 if you don’t back yourself who’s really got your back 🤷🏼‍♂️ I also know I’ve sounded like a bit of a broken record recently but there’s so much exciting stuff bubbling beneath the surface. And if nothing else its given me proper validation that not only is this industry crying out for change but so are the people in it 🧠 Yes I’ve had to do a bit of work this week 💻 but I’ve also had the space to pause, reflect and get laser focused on why I set out to do this in the first place. And this week has truly reminded me of my why ❤️ I wish I could properly put into words how much this little human means to me, but I hope if nothing else she knows just how much it’s meant to spend a full week together playing pool sharks 🦈 and making memories that truly matter. I hope we won’t need to 😂 but you can always rebuild a business, but you definitely can’t replay a childhood. And building memories with the people you love? That’s your real legacy.

Computer monitor desk claw assembly has by far overtaken Ikea flat pack furniture as THE marriage testing activity in the Farren household 😂 I think I’ll leave it there… but we managed to tick off an office move this weekend and are now fully settled into our new TMF HQ 🚀 Just need some bums on seats now, but give me a few more weeks and we will start mapping some faces against these new desks 😁 Feeling full of energy this week which is going to come in handy. A very early start tomorrow morning for a flight out to Lisbon ✈️ for another week immersed in discussion and debate about the future of accounting. Friday’s early morning flight back to Bristol is going to be an eye stinger, but totally worth it if all timings manage to align 🤞🏼 I may have managed to bag some tickets for a certain reunion gig kicking off in Cardiff that night. Don’t fail me now EasyJet. You gotta roll with it… 🎶

                          43

Early flight out to Lisbon this morning ✈️ for a few days of networking (and probably some heated but healthy debate on where the future of accounting is heading) with some real pioneers pushing our profession forward. Cheltenham felt like peak Mediterranean this morning so excited for some cooler weather in Portugal… 😂 On a more serious note, I’m buzzing to officially announce a new partnership with the team at DAC (Digital Accountants Club) ✅ From July I’ll be delivering monthly industry AI updates into this growing community and helping unpack the latest trends, tools and practical ways firms can scale smarter with tech, AI and global talent. For me this partnership just makes sense. It ties in perfectly with the work we’re doing day in day out with clients at The Modern Firm™ helping ambitious firms rethink how they operate and build something genuinely different. I love what Jeri Williams FCA 🐪 is doing with DAC, creating a space where accountants can learn, challenge each other, and move the profession forward together. Delivering sessions into this community is something I think will be super valuable 👌🏽 We kick things off later this month. If you’re a DAC member, keep an eye out. Plenty of practical ideas (and probably a few of my terrible jokes) to come. Not a member but Curious? Drop me a message 📥 or check out DAC, it’s definitely a cool place to hang out if you’re looking to do things differently.

I’ve not done an all inclusive holiday in years 🏖️ They were an annual affair when we were kids and I always used to wonder why my parents wanted to spend an entire week in the same place, eating the same food, and socialising with the same families 🤔 Maybe that’s why over the years I’ve avoided coming back to places like Tenerife. There’s a big wide world out there waiting to be explored 🤷🏼‍♂️ But my god… how right my parents (and those before them) were 😂 Nail the strategy and the execution takes care of itself. Day 1 of an all inclusive holiday is all about over networking with every family you can find around the pool 🏊‍♂️ You’ve all got one shared yet simple mission. Force friendships upon your children so you can spend approximately 50% of the rest of your holiday lying in the sun while they play with their new best mates for life ✅ It’s not quite full delegation, you must accept your hourly call up as the resident pool shark 🦈 as a rite of passage. But it’s a small price to pay for a decent stint in the sun ☀️ Still absloutley perplexed about people whp reserve sun lonugers around a pool at 6am…

This week marks the end of an era 📌 As I’ve told countless people on Teams calls over the years, I moved into my little glass box of an office almost four years ago now, shortly after my home office was painted pink and a cot was put right in the middle of it. That same statement is always almost met with the same feedback. It takes two to tango Luke. Fair point well made 🫡 Anyway this glass box has been the backdrop to a huge part of my professional journey.
From the early days of Acclivity Advisors (Now part of Cooper Parry Group) to our merger and my time with Cooper Parry and most recently, the birth of The Modern Firm™.
Each company representing an important chapter 📖 But it’s time to move on.
We (I’ve 😂) outgrown this space and with the imminent new hires we’ve got lined up at TMF HQ we need a proper home. I’ve been told by countless people that office space just isn’t necessary anymore.
But in reaility I’m not very good at being told what to do.
So we’re ignoring that advice and moving house. We’re not going far. The dizzy heights of the 5th floor of our current Clockwise Offices will be the new home for me and this growing team. This feels like another exciting milestone, and there are definitely more coming, for that much I’m sure. Might be getting a bit boring now… Watch this space 😁

                                46

This week has been a solid 9.5/10* If I’ve taken nothing else from the last 2 days, it’s that the vast majority of accounting firms are simply not prepared for the tidal wave of change that’s coming 🫵🏽 And I think the lack of action is actually quite frightening. There’s a narrative that keeps being peddled that this industry (and others) has been here before, ridden out past change curves, and things haven’t really been all that different in the end 🤷🏼‍♂️ You cannot seriously apply that same level of logic to the current AI wave 🧐 Change is coming. And it’s coming fast. AI, RPA, Agents [insert industry buzzword here] are going to fundamentally change how all firms need to operate within the next few years. And those who don’t want to accept that are, I’m afraid, going to get left behind 🙅🏽 As is always with these events, great catching up with a bunch of very cool people 😎 One thing AI isn’t going to replace is the deep and meaningful relationships this industry helps facilitate in abundance ✅ And this sector is definitely not short of cool people. So next week, we do it all again. In Lisbon ✈️ Naturally. *10/10 if a pint of Guinness didn’t cost £7+ these days. Daylight robbery.
