	Sixty-five percent of new businesses fail in the first ten years and studies show franchises only slightly vary. Franchise owners whose support and guidance needs are not met by the corporate office may not know that help is available. While an operations manual is a good tool, it does NOT anticipate every obstacle franchise owners face. Franchisors promise the world in support and training; however, the reality usually sets in after the initial training is complete, even that training is rarely done well. Most often a franchise owner is successful because of pure grit and hard work with years of long hours. The truth is that hundreds of franchises fail each year. The most frequent causes: lack of funds, poor people skills, reluctance to follow the formula, a mismatch between franchisee and the business, and -- perhaps surprisingly -- an inept franchisor.

I joined the all-volunteer department as a firefighter in 1999. After a promotion to lieutenant and becoming an instructor, I was asked to be chief in 2007. As Chief, I was responsible for day-to-day operations and health of the department along with its fifty firefighters, determine best methods to recruit, oversee a budget, devise and implement departmental training and manage maintenance of all apparatus and equipment. I reported directly to the Mayor of Terrace Park. As Chief, it was my responsibility to respond to all emergencies and direct the fire crews to most safely and efficiently mitigate any emergency including but not limited to:
1)	Structure/vehicle fires in our jurisdiction and neighboring jurisdictions,
2)	motor vehicle collisions (including extrication),
3)	carbon monoxide leaks,
4)	medical emergencies including trauma,
5)	searches for missing individuals,
6)	mass casualty incidents including active shooter situations,
7)	natural disasters including river rescues and
8)	utilities emergencies.
In addition, I was also certified as an Urban Search and Rescue Technician and EMT-Basic with specialized training in rope, swift water, confined space, trench, lost person search and structural collapse rescues and recoveries and served with the Hamilton County USAR team ten years.

I was managing partner of a $2,000,000+ annual revenues franchise started from $0 initial sales. Berstein-Frey, LLC was the first franchise sold by ImageFIRST. The general manager reported to me as well as the accounting team at the corporate offices and local sales staff. In all, I employed seven others; four of which over fifteen years each. I assisted in training other franchise locations on all aspects of operating a stand-alone business.

My responsibilities included working closely with plant managers with day-to-day and long-term projects to most efficiently produce industrial apparel. From 1994-1997 I was the Chief Engineer of the first off-shore Red Kap facility with over one-thousand employees in Honduras. During that time up to six engineers were under my training and supervision. I am proficient in Spanish.
