I help new and aspiring assistant principals develop the skills they need to be successful to take the next step in their leadership journey. The assistant principalship is one of the most challenging positions in K-12 education, but it can be incredibly rewarding when done well. The challenge is that the preparation programs aspiring administrators go through to attain their administrative certification are primarily focused on the building principal, leaving most new assistant principals woefully unprepared for their roles. The assistant principal position is unlike any other role in education, and it requires a specific set of skills. However, those skills are often neglected, and that is why, in educational research, the assistant principal is sometimes referred to as "the forgotten educator." I remember feeling unprepared for my first assistant principal position. That led me to focus on the preparation experiences of new assistant principals in my doctoral study, and that is where I confirmed that my experience wasn't unique. Over and over again, new assistant principals told me that they were not prepared for the assistant principalship. To take it a step further, one of my study participants told me that the only thing that was harder for him than performing the duties of the assistant principal position was GETTING his first assistant principal job. Sometimes it takes YEARS of applying and interviewing before landing your first assistant principalship. That is why I founded the New School Leader. I wanted to create something that focused on serving one specific audience that is neglected in the existing literature: new and aspiring assistant principals. We put out practical, actionable content to help aspiring assistant principals get their first AP position and to help new assistant principals thrive once they get into the role.
