🚨 China has banned the use of NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel’s AI chips in state-funded data centers, according to Reuters.

The move is part of Beijing’s ongoing effort to strengthen its domestic semiconductor industry and reduce reliance on U.S. technology.

The ban affects new government-backed projects and is seen as a direct response to U.S. export restrictions that limit China’s access to advanced AI hardware.

Data centers already using foreign chips will be reviewed individually, but new state-funded facilities will have to turn to Chinese alternatives like Huawei’s Ascend processors.

This marks another major step in the growing tech divide between the U.S. and China, signaling how deep the split in global AI infrastructure could become.

And suddenly — Huawei, Cambricon, and MetaX are eating Nvidia’s lunch.

Here’s what’s happening 👇

💡 China has ordered state-funded AI data centers (over $100B in investment!) to only use domestic AI chips.

💾 Companies like Huawei, Cambricon, MetaX, Moore Threads, and Enflame are suddenly the new stars.

📈 Cambricon’s revenue surged 14x YoY, swinging to a 567M yuan profit — all thanks to Nvidia’s absence.

Meanwhile, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang just landed in Taiwan and said:

“There are no active discussions on selling Blackwell chips to China.”
“It’s up to China when they’d like Nvidia products back.”

That’s code for: the world’s most valuable chipmaker just got shut out of the biggest growth market on Earth.

This analysis of giving raises versus hiring someone new is interesting, but it lacks context. Sometimes, it makes sense to hire rather than to give a raise. Maybe the company and its market has shifted a lot over the last 2 years and the employee in question doesn't have the skills that we now need. Therefore, giving them a raise makes no sense and hiring externally does. That all said, I think Bryan's argument is right far more often than it's wrong. It simply isn't ALWAYS right.

I'd rather hire someone that took some big swings and missed than someone who played it safe and nailed it. The goal isn't a perfect track record. The goal is to learn faster than anyone else.

This doesn't mean being reckless or careless, to be clear. It means being bold enough to form a hypothesis, test it, and find out if you were right. It means being willing to be proven wrong - then having the resilience to try again.

The experiments that “fail” are often the ones that teach us the most and ultimately guide us in the right direction. If something doesn’t work out, that’s fine! That’s just the flywheel turning, because you can then try something else.

The only problem with failure is if the root causes never change.

So as I tell my team: be proud of what doesn’t ship or flights that don’t work out. Those weren't a waste. They were lessons.
