As a York Research Chair, I focus on studying the use of sport to support gender-related development goals, policies and practices using digital participatory research methods. The goal of this work is to re-envision new, community-oriented and socially just approaches to sport for development and peace initiatives, especially those focused on gender.

DREAMING in Sport Lab

Supported by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Ontario Research Fund, the goal of the DREAMING Sport Lab is to DREAM big. We aim to re-think and better understand the intersections of sport/gender/mobility/climate change/social justice/equity/and ‘development’. 

Led by Dr. Hayhurst, our lab members use a range of research method/ologies, but all are exposed to digital participatory research approaches (DPR). We think this approach enables us to dive deeply into the dynamic, fulsome and lived experiences of folx involved in sports, recreation, physical activity and play while focusing on issues like gender, social justice, health, and human rights.

- Conducted research using qualitative methods (interviews, focus groups, photovoice, participant observation, document analysis) to explore impacts and implications of corporate-funded programs that aim to use sport and recreation as tools to improve the wellbeing, health, education and development of Indigenous young women and girls in Canada and Australia.
- To accomplish this research objective, I investigated the corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities of two multinational corporations (one in the sporting goods industry, the other in health-related consumer goods) that are focused on Indigenous health, sport and recreation.

- Dissertation used in-depth ethnographic research (interviews, focus groups, participant observation, and document analysis) to explore impacts and implications for gender equality, empowerment and girls’ rights of a multinational corporation's social responsibility initiatives targeting women and girls’ wellbeing, health and development in Sub-Saharan Africa. 
- In-depth interviews carried out with corporate responsibility executives, NGO staff members and girls while conducting extensive fieldwork in Eastern Uganda.
- Results of research used to better understand effects of private sector’s role in promoting gender equality and women and girls’ empowerment.

- Spearheaded strategic partnership work plan to engage key stakeholders in partnership agreement (including UNMC and UN Office of Sport for Development and Peace) on five signature global events to promote awareness of Millennium Development Goals, including the Beijing Olympic Games.
- Disseminated key educational messaging on the Millennium Development Goals through lectures to UNDP key constituents, including United Nations Associations, faith-based groups, high schools and university students.
- Composed educational policy fact sheets on Millennium Development Goals used as background materials for content of new UN Millennium Campaign website launch.
- Composed effective funding proposals (ranging from $2000-$115,000 USD) and reports for UNMC civil society organization partners seeking financial support from UNDP.  
- Led UNMC’s involvement in UN Global Youth Leadership Summit, successfully recruited youth to participate in campaign-related activities.
- Constructed detailed communications strategy and implementation plan to be used as a framework for engaging youth in UNMC-related activities.
- Developed and coordinated web-related databases, public relations and marketing tools for ‘Stand Up Against Poverty,’ a global anti-poverty advocacy initiative that aimed to promote awareness surrounding the Millennium Development Goals, and included over 23.5 million global participants.
- Wrote, updated and coordinated content for Stand Up Against Poverty website and assisted with development of social marketing strategy to increase campaign awareness and improve outreach to youth on a global scale. 
- Assisted in assigning budgets and expenditure lines for all procurement matters related to European, faith-based, civil society and local authorities portfolios of the UNMC.
