I worked as an Associate to Emplacement, an organisation who provided coaching and support to professional job seekers who found themselves redundant/on the job market against their wishes. I proactively gained the trust of a number of JCP across the region (about 10 in total) who then referred their professionals and executives to me for one hour sessions. The types of people I coached varied from Financial Controllers, to a Biologist, Teachers, Doctors,and restaurant managers. I worked this role whilst simultaneously running Qui Recruitment. I devised targets and action plans WITH those referred to me, during the sessions. I gained a lot from this role both professionally as it meant I was interviewing non recruiters again and personally when I would hear of success stories based on the action plans we had worked together. During this time, I also recruited 2 other associates whom I had known for many years, who developed their own areas too and I mentored them during their period of coaching too.

It’s time to announce 📣 

Yes- it’s official - I’m HIRING for Qui Recruitment R2R Rec2Rec 🥳

The role 

R2R into USA, Europe and beyond - the world is your oyster and basically you can define the location (as long as it’s outside our current territory of northwest, leeds and london)

Full lifecycle of the process which includes: 

Clients - identifying clients who match our QUI values, building long lasting relationships with those businesses- guiding and advising on much more than ‘just’ recruitment and full account management of the clients once the terms are signed. This will mainly be recruitment agencies and end user clients for strategic internal hires. 

Candidates - identifying and building meaningful relationships with a community of experienced and budding recruitment professionals within the consultancy space and when applicable,  internal talent acquisition. Becoming their confidante. Their guide in the market, acting as their most trusted advisor throughout their career. At QUI we reverse the model by going to market with a candidates requirements by gaining their exclusivity and this is earned through trust and reputation 

Community - building a community filled with diversity and reflective of all that QUI holds dear - this will be through LinkedIn and also other social media platforms such as TikTok, in real life we want to continue to grow through The Recruiter's Recruitment Podcast  and so real life interaction at live events and networking opportunities will be encouraged 

The role will be targeted on outcomes with revenue and ratios being the key measures 

The role will be home based ideally within travelling distance to Manchester as we do try and get together at least once or twice a month if we can. 

You will manage your own diary and so there are no set hours as with the international focus of this role I recognise that this will reflect in the time zones needed to be worked 

The person 

Given my entire business is based on our core values of Quality, urgency and integrity, these will be at the heart of every action and decision you take 

I don’t want a Lysha clone; the 3 of us currently work so brilliantly together because actually we are all so different and diverse / but what we all have in abundance is those 3 core values - you need to be honest to your core as this is what sets us apart in the R2R market 

In order to have credibility and expertise I need you to have min 4 years agency recruitment experience within perm professional services - and it is essential that your method of recruitment has been candidate focused - and that you have worked a candidate short market 

Package - I’m open on salary - commission is a small monthly threshold and then 20% over that paid monthly - profit share paid after probation (once a year).

Who else fell into recruitment? 

If so, I would love to know how it came about in the first place 

My story is I had left college (having failed A levels so never made it to uni ) with a job in marketing aged only 19; got made redundant after a year. 

I then fell into property management for private landlords and really loved that job (and in fact the similarities between that job and recuitment is obvious with matching up skills, consultative - have you ever had to deal with irate tenants stood in front of you yelling?- and managing a portfolio 

Personal life took me out of manchester to Birmingham where I was lucky enough to be selected during cohort interviews to work for a blue chip fmcg company in their sales department- a job I loved for the people I worked with as the role itself was repetitive and not consultative at all 

So I flicked open the Grocer magazine (the fmcg bible) and saw the advert for “DO YOU  WANT TO BE A RECRUITER?”

I recall it probably also said “earn 100k in your first year”  🤣 

I made the call to the R2R and the rest they say is history 

That was way back in 1998; and in my guise as R2R I still meet newish recruiters who also fell in although the balance of those who actually choose our amazing Industry has definitely flipped to being the majority

It’s almost 20 years since I went on maternity leave 

And the company I worked for at the time provided a really excellent maternity package for 2004/5 with enhanced pay of 100% for 6 months and then 90% for 9 months which was really supportive during my absence of leave 

And yet I think that 20 years later that’s still really unusual with a lot of testimony that recruitment companies are still only providing statutory maternity (and paternity) leave 

Over the coming weeks we are going to be conducting an intensive survey into this with our own customers but we would love a broader spectrum to include into the study

To my fellow working parents 

Please don’t be too hard on yourself during the school holidays with the guilt trips 

Please don’t regret the days you’re working and the kids are in childcare  

Please understand that your children will be inspired by you in the future I promise 

How do I know this for certain?

Because I asked my now fully grown kids what impact they felt when they were younger when I was juggling working during their school holidays 

And do you know what this cute and wise one answered? 

“We didn’t think anything of it, it was just a fact that some days you had to work. I think parents sometimes overthink on their kids behalf and honestly, mum, we never resented you. We knew you were working cos you love your job and we knew you needed to work to earn money. So not once did we begrudge you or feel sad.”

I wrote this down as I know and hope that at least one parent reading this will take comfort at the actual realization of our society 

Children expect us to work 

Children know it’s for our livelihood 

And children know it’s what helps us define who we are as opposed to “just” being mum or dad 

I hope the days you feel guilty are over as when I asked this yesterday any sense of historic guilt evaporated and dare I say it. I felt proud.

To my fellow solo explorers 

Despite the fact I’ve two daughters living with me, I spend most of my weekends by myself as they both work in hospitality so are usually working all weekend 😅

And really embracing solo time since my second divorce in 2017 

Made me truly experience JOMO and the love of being by myself 

You can feel lonely in a room surrounded other people 

Yet it took me 40 odd years to realise that you enter and leave this world alone 

And when you teach yourself the true job of loving yourself 

You won’t ever feel FOMO again 

I’ve had a glorious self care day🥹

A solo hike up on the moor 

A solitary picnic taking  in the view and the silence 

A quiet coffee in a sunny garden centre cafe

Gosh my Scooby was beautiful

He was a smart dog, really funny and quirky 

As I think most miniature schnauzers are 

And there isn’t a day goes by where we don’t think about him 

He’s sorely missed and irreplaceable as he was the family dog from my children’s childhoods 

And he was my shadow 

And loyal best friend through my divorce

Here’s why being niche is vital in recruitment 

Sometimes it’s the small things that matter most in the detail of a job search for your candidates 

Like knowing the nitty gritty of your niche market or geography 

Understanding the background stories of companies that your unicorn candidates may know nothing about 

Having the knowledge and knowing who’s who in your field 

And then blowing your candidate away with a process that feels like a breeze (how often does that actually happen but anyway….!🤣) 

Recruitment in a niche means you’re trusting an expert 

Becoming a niche expert means immersing yourself and doing the work- you can’t just become the niche expert - it takes time to build that knowledge and benchmarking capability 

I’m always humbled by endorsements but this one really mattered as the career move was so critical for this lovely human and they entrusted me entirely in their journey

So question is - where do you start when embarking on your next career journey?

Embrace your inner child 

Today I went on the swings and seesaw in an empty park with my boyfriend 

We roared with laughter 

We ran around with no inhibitions 

We also nearly chucked up on the roundabout 🤣

Stopped giving a 💩 about what other people think

How do you ensure you’re not replaced by AI? 

By being more human in your interactions with your customers 

By actually caring about their journey 

By being present in those conversations and listening to what they want 

The “I” of AI is intelligence 

Not intuitiveness 

Not insight fullness 

Not integrity 

We are conscious beings and I genuinely believe that what reaffirms how humans will always be preferential to using AI to find a job

Is that we add meaning to the process 

“You were more like a therapist”  

And that sums it up doesn’t it; this covert candidate was on a career journey that no bot could have prepared them for 🤖

Manchester connections I need some ideas

In may I turn the big 5-0 and after I’ve been treated to a lovely lunch in my local village I want to find an activity that me, my boyfriend, and my daughters can do that isn’t booze fueled and will entertain a 16 yr old as well as a 52 yr old 🤣

And that doesn’t cost the earth 

I’ve thought about the cube and crystal maze - both quite expensive but are they worth it?
