Microsoft has three scores deciding if your emails land in the inbox.

Most people have no idea they exist.

After weeks of diving into Microsoft's email filtering system, here's what I learned. 👇🏻

There are three scores that matter.

1️⃣ BCL (Bulk Complaint Level)

Are you identified as a bulk sender? That’s not a bad thing. But what's your score?

Think of this as Microsoft asking: "Is this person sending to hundreds of people who don't want their emails?"

Even if you're doing legitimate cold outreach, get flagged as "bulk" and you're fighting an uphill battle.

2️⃣ SCL (Spam Confidence Level)

How confident is Microsoft that you're sending spam?

This score evaluates your content, your sending patterns, your domain reputation.

One bad campaign can spike this score and hurt your placement for weeks.

3️⃣ PCL (Phishing Confidence Level)

Does your email look like a phishing attempt?

Suspicious links, urgent language, impersonation attempts - all of this feeds into your phishing score.


These scores are calculated per mailbox, not just per domain.

We tested two people on the same domain.

One had a SCL of 5 (terrible). The other was clean.

Same domain. Different individual reputations.

You can't fix what you can't measure.

Most people wait until their deliverability tanks, then scramble to figure out why.

By then, you've already burned your reputation.

Here's why that's killing your deliverability (and your brand):

Your main domain is your reputation.

It's where your team communicates.
Where customers email you.
Where partners reach out.

One bad cold email campaign can torch that reputation. Forever.

When you cold email from your main domain:

→ Every bounce damages sender reputation.

The setup:

1️⃣ Buy a secondary domain ($12-15/year)
2️⃣ Set up proper DNS records (SPF, DKIM, DMARC)
3️⃣ Warm it up for 2-3 weeks before sending
4️⃣ Keep your sending volume conservative
5️⃣ Monitor deliverability separately from your main domain

The cost of not doing this:

One bad campaign. One blacklist. One spam complaint spiral.
