No one likes to see lazy in their feed.

No, I'm not talking about selfies before your nap. Or galleries filled with your beach pics. 

I'm talking about lazily formatted posts with little to no context. 

I see it so often. Someone wants you to click a link. But they don't provide any context. No reason why you should click that link.

Will clicking:
1. Help me solve a problem?
2. Allow me to download a helpful resource?
3. Sign me up to receive spammy emails every hour on the hour?

Context is what converts into clicks and engagement. So why aren't you sharing it?

Here's where I give a shout-out to a dynamic duo who always provide a ton of valuable context before asking you to click a link, download, or even comment.

Templates rarely get the love and appreciation they deserve.

I think many people believe using a template is cheating. And that's sad.

Because a template is a starting point. It's structure rather than staring at a blank page. 

Sure, if you go template shopping and choose the first template that shows up in a search, you might end up with an end product that isn't particularly unique. Nor will it be brand-ready.

Templates, like anything else in your toolbox, need to be targeted. They need to be designed and used with the proper intent and purpose. And, they need to be keyed into your brand and audience.

I love templates. I use them for both writing and graphic design. 

But I don't go out and by a pre-made template. I create my own. 

Templates that will help you save time down the road require time, effort, and trial and error before they can do their job properly.

When did downloading a resource become so fraught with peril.

And I'm talking about the terror going on in my inbox.

Yes, I provided my email and, good grief, a fake-ish phone number (I'm not allowing repeat calls to further ruin my day) in order to download your guide.

And you took that as interest.

The disconnect is REAL, y'all.

Yes, I was interested in the guide. Not in purchasing your product. I provided my email so you could email THAT guide.

I'm not naive. I've been around the social media block a few times. I understand that providing my email equals providing permission to email me. 

However, it does NOT provide permission for you to bombard me with increasingly hysterical and presumptuous missives.

You took the time to create an intake form to gather my contact information, as well as information about the company I work for. So, why, for the love of Pete, wouldn't you use that same form to suss my purchasing intent? 

And save yourself the contempt that your increasingly desperate and delusional emails generate.

If there's one thing about perfomative company culture that needs to disappear, yesterday ...

It's "We're A Family" (BLECHHHHH!!!)

The "we're a family" delusion is not the flex you think it is. In fact, it's a red flag that just might cause your company to lose out on the best prospects.

Having worked for more than my fair share of dysfunctional and borderline dangerous families in my past, I can guarantee you that if my family ever acted in an even remotely similar fashion, I'd immediately disown them!

We don't need a family at work. 

We need autonomy, trust, room to trial and error, opportunities to learn, and access to the right people and data.

And while I might play the big sister role from time to time, I'd never assume that any of my peers actually need a big sister.

Family has its place. And, most of the time, that place is NOT the workplace.
