We hacked the Facebook algorithm. Here's how:


We were working with a unique brand, a global marketplace for collectible cards, serving customers worldwide.

Their USP was revolutionary for the niche - CardTrader ZERO. 

One single shipment from sellers across the globe. Massive savings on shipping costs.

This wasn't your typical eCommerce brand.

Marketplace dynamics are different. Customers make frequent purchases. Multiple transactions per month. 

Facebook's algorithm kept optimizing for the wrong thing - returning customers.

We were showing impressive purchase volumes.
But we were sitting on a ticking time bomb.

Out of 39,000 purchases, only 4,000 were new customers. 

10% new customer rate when we needed 50%+.

So we did something Facebook didn't want us to do.

We created a custom "New Purchase" metric. Bypassed their entire optimization system. Forced the algorithm to focus ONLY on first-time buyers.

90% of our budget went to acquiring new customers. Not retargeting.

Facebook fought us on this. 

Their algorithm kept trying to revert to easy wins... returning customers who already knew the brand.

But we held the line.

We implemented our 1 x 3 testing framework. 

Each creative concept got 3 ads minimum. Same concept, different formats. 

Then came the expansion challenge.

Most agencies would create entirely new campaigns for each country. Waste thousands on untested concepts.

Not us.

We took our best performing creatives from the main market. Translated them with AI + human quality check. Launched in Canada, Spain, UK.

The results:

New customer CPA of €20.24 vs account average of €27.18.

And we didn't stop there.

Every creative got tagged with our naming convention. Concept. Angle. Copy. Date. Full transparency on what worked and why.

The street interview format nobody was using became our highest spender with 39.72% hook rate.

Ad "340" that everyone internally thought was too ugly was the best performer across all metrics.

In January 2025, we hit 5,167 new customers acquired in a single month.

The revenue jumped from $4M to $35M annually.

All because we refused to let Facebook decide who our customers should be.

IKEA just showed everyone how to sell without showing your product. Their new "Wherever Life Goes" campaign launched last month.

And it's named one of the best campaigns of 2025.

Zero product shots. Only emotional moments + price tags.

The ads show intimate life moments. A couple's first kiss. A child's first steps. Someone crying while packing boxes.

But instead of showing furniture, they just overlay IKEA's iconic yellow price tag.

Kiss scene = SÄBÖVIK double bed price tag.
Teary eyes = DUNDERGUBBE moving box.
Kid practicing violin = sound-absorbing screen.

The product sells itself through context.

Most brands would've done this:
"Here's our beautiful bed in a staged bedroom"
"Look at our designer moving boxes"

IKEA did the opposite.

They let the MOMENT sell the need.
They let the PRICE TAG communicate value.
They let EMOTION drive the purchase intent.

This is what I mean when I say creative strategy matters more than production value.

The insight is brilliant:
People don't buy furniture. They buy solutions for life transitions.

10 years in e-commerce taught me this:
The best ads don't showcase features.
They showcase the moment your product becomes necessary.

For DTC brands, the takeaway isn't "copy IKEA's style."

It's this:

What life moment makes YOUR product essential?
Can you show that moment without showing your product?
Can you make your brand's iconic element (price, guarantee, result) the hero?

Carousel ads are dead.
Well, mostly.

I've been testing creatives for 10 years. Carousel ads used to work everywhere.

Now they barely work except for one use case: catalog ads.
If you're showing actual products like a card catalog, carousels still convert. The format makes sense.

But the old approach of creating three static ads and putting them into a carousel is very difficult to make it work now.

Here's what still works: niche-specific winners.

Every niche is different. Every niche has different triggers. There's no one-size-fits-all.

How do you make a toilet product go viral? This toilet brand went from $3M to $15M in revenue in ONE YEAR!

Here's the story:

2015. Bobby Edwards ran a family business selling toilet stools.

They'd been on Shark Tank. Got investment from Lori Greiner. Had some traction.

But they needed a breakthrough ad campaign.

The problem: how do you advertise a toilet product without being gross?

Harmon Brothers pitched the unicorn idea.

Edwards' Shark Tank investor said no. Too risky. 

His family thought it was too weird.

$250,000 was a massive investment for a bootstrapped company.

Edwards ignored everyone and green-lit it anyway.

The Creative:

"This Unicorn Changed the Way I Poop." Three minutes long.

A prince and a unicorn that poops rainbow ice cream. Medieval setting.

The unicorn demonstrates proper pooping technique while making soft-serve for children.

Absurd. Hilarious. Educational. Impossible to look away.

Shot by Harmon Brothers, the same team behind Poo-Pourri's viral hit.

October 2015: Video launches.

Within one week: Edwards put all three manufacturing plants on 24-hour production schedules.

First month: 50+ million views on Facebook and YouTube combined.

Total reach: 170+ million views across all platforms.

 70% of viewers watched the entire 3-minute video. 75% of views were organic.

Sales results:

- 600% increase in online sales
- 400% increase in retail sales at Bed Bath & Beyond
