Have you ever thought to yourself, “I wish I had known that sooner?” I certainly have. Let’s go back and think about where you were in August of 2009. I was in southern California and had recently enlisted in the Marine Corps. I was sitting in a hot, smelly auditorium and had just been given a signup sheet for the government’s version of a 401k. I remember reading through the questions that were asking me how much I wanted to invest, which investments I wanted, and what type of account I wanted. As I was looking through these options, I thought to myself, “I have no idea what any of this means” and when I looked to my left and my right, all I saw were more confused faces. I wasn’t the only one. Unfortunately, there wasn’t anyone there who could help me with my questions, or even point me in the right direction. After that, I promised myself I would learn how all of these investments and taxes worked so I would never be in that situation again. I never wanted to feel like I was GUESSING when it came to making BIG decisions with my money. When I look back on that hot, August day, I can tell you now, that I wasn’t investing enough, I was invested like someone who was already retired, and I wasn’t being very smart about taxes either.
