I could hear the squeaking of people's shoes as they made their way into the store, shaking off the raindrops from the monsoon outside. 

I had two objectives when I stepped into Target last night:

- Return clothes I waited to try on until I got home, only to realize I hated them. 
- Buy diapers for my son. 

So, as I stood in line at the customer service desk, I expected a quick exchange.

But, the two ladies in front of me had different plans. 

Long-winded conversations. 
Convoluted returns. 
Apps not working. 
Low stock on items. 

The list goes on, but Regina, the lady behind the counter, never wavered. 

She stayed calm and connected even though the line behind me started growing. 

I started shifting back and forth on my feet, looking around at all the water-logged people and getting nervous for her. 

She was the only one there. 

I didn't want people to get impatient and start being rude to her. 

So, naturally, I started planning my defense of Regina in my head if someone started to give her the business. 

All while I was doing this, she focused on the customers she was working with, giving them her undivided attention with a wonderful demeanor. 

It made me think of how easy it is to lose focus on what we're trying to accomplish. 

There will always be distractions, and there will always be a growing list of to-dos that trail us. 

But the only way to make meaningful progress is to stay the course and focus on what's in front of us. 

So today, be like Regina. 

Focus on what's in front of you and block out the noise.

Have you ever noticed how a piece of rotten fruit affects the other fruits around it?


I think of rotten fruit as negative people - they bring out the worst in those around them.

This example is meant to make us think about the company we keep.

If you spend time with a perpetually negative person, you’ll slowly but surely notice that you're morphing into a negative person.

Likewise, if you choose to spend time with motivated and optimistic people, guess what... you’ll notice that you're motivated and have an optimistic outlook.

TLDR: Bad people, just like rotten fruit, spoil those around them.

"Answer a question."

That's the first time I saw this button on my profile. 

When you click it, it takes you to collaborative articles you can contribute to. 

My honest knee-jerk reaction is I don't love this. 

At face-value, it's a great way to spur on content creation, but I think our responses get lost in the sea of AI-generated and oftentimes pithy answers. 

Here's what I think you should do instead.

Look through the article topics and if you find one you like, create a post of your own around it. 

Use those questions as content prompts for your own posts. 

Sure, you can still post your answer to the article, but I'd lead first with content on your profile. 

That's where I believe you get the most value and better opportunities to expand your network.

We all have ideas. 
We all have some semblance of confidence. 
But, what sets us apart from the rest is our courage to try. 


There were about five blueberries left on her plate. 

"You have to finish those!"

"I don't want them."

..........

"But, they're good for you!"

*continued blank stares*

That's an approach I tried for the longest time to no avail. 

So, I decided to do something different.

I took out my phone, opened Google, and typed, "health benefits of blueberries."

I skimmed through a few articles and found out they're good for your:

🧠 Brain
❤️ Heart
🦴 Bones 

(That's the toddler translation)

The next time I offered blueberries, I told her about those benefits. 

Of course, I had to get a little theatrical and act things out. 

But breaking it down in a way that helped her understand that those blueberries on her plate helped her build a healthy heart, brain, and bones got her to take action. 

You can do the same with your marketing messaging. 

It's easy to tell people your product's the best, but it doesn't resonate.

When you can show people through examples WHY your product is the best, they'll take notice.

Business professional translation: Sell the why. Not the what.

I think it's a great question.

Do you push yourself to learn and grow?
Do you strengthen or weaken your team's morale?

Think about it. 

Someone you trust/follow on social media posted about a brand-new product/service they purchased/used.

And, in some cases, you made a purchase. 

On the brand side, social proof is invaluable and something you can't afford to overlook. 

Your product/service is the first domino of social proof. 

Keep that in mind and create positive experiences your customers WANT to talk about.

Just because it's labeled "best practice" doesn't mean it's best practice for your brand. 

Take email marketing for example. 

There are days/times that are supposedly best for sending an email. 

Instead of seeing them as absolute facts, view them as suggestions. 

Because just like with other forms of marketing, you need to collect data through testing to gain a deeper understanding of how your target audience responds to your emails. 

From there, take what you’ve collected and look for trends and uncover the days/times that work best for YOUR audience. 

Test —> collect —> analyze —> implement —> repeat

YOU CAN DO IT. 

Here are 5️⃣ tips to get started:

✅ Be real

When you try being someone you're not and talk about topics you *think* you should talk about, people will notice.

Your content will feel forced and lack creativity.

Talk about the topics you're interested in, lean into what makes you unique, and enjoy the process, people will notice.

✅ Post consistently

People always say this and while you might be thinking, "PLEASE tell me something different!!!"

No.

You'll struggle to get your footing if your posting cadence is sporadic.

Social moves fast and you have to move with it or you'll get left behind.

If you're starting out, put a "meeting" on your calendar every day to remind you to post.

This will help you get into the habit of posting daily.

✅ Engage with others

Again, broken record but equally important.

Commenting on other people's posts gets your name out there.

But, it's more than just saying "Great post!"

It's about putting in the effort to keep the conversation going.

Example...

"Great post!! ((EXPLAIN WHY YOU THINK IT'S A GOOD POST))"

✅ Comments are content

This leads me to my next point, other people's posts are prompts for your content creation.

You've already done the work, repurpose your comments and turn them into posts on your profile.

✅ Pay attention

Your audience is the ultimate litmus test for your content.

Pay attention to your performance.

LinkedIn's analytics are getting better.

Use them to your advantage.

Here's how ⬇

1️⃣ On your main feed, on the left-hand side under your profile picture, click "Analytics & tools"

2️⃣ At the top of this page you'll "Post impressions." Click it.

3️⃣ You'll see two buttons "Past 7 Days" and "Impressions."

Click on the "Past 7 Days" button to adjust the timeframe and the "Impressions" button to toggle between Impressions and Engagements.

4️⃣ Once you make your choices, scroll down and you'll see a section titled, "Top Performing Posts."

It's here you'll see a list of your best posts based on the parameters you selected.

What types of posts performed best (article, text, text + image, video, carousel)?

What were you talking about?

Did this post receive a lot of comments?

Use the answers to these questions to build on those topics and test the format that worked.

I was thinking about this the other day.

When did I fall in love with writing?

It was in a creative writing class in third or fourth grade. 

Our desks were pushed into a quadrant; my little group was in the middle of the room. 

The task was to write a story. 

That's it. 

Those were the instructions. 

But with no guide rails, a pencil in hand, and paper on my desk, I was off to the races. 

I furiously scribbled down my storyline about a haunted house. 

Looking back, I think I went into a flow state. 

Ideas poured from my mind and onto the paper. 

I still remember that story and a line about turning a doorknob and describing the creaking noise as the door opened.

Those feelings of pure joy and excitement about writing have stayed with me ever since.

If your website is mostly pop-ups and ads, I have a question for you...


WHY?

You want people to stay on your website and consume your content. 

When your site is all pop-ups, chat boxes, and ads, you make the user experience feel like a revolving door. 

As soon as they're in, they leave. 

You want your website to feel like a traditional door with a nice "Welcome" mat as they cross the threshold. 

Local news sites are guilty of this. 

Their websites are primarily ads (and the weirdest kind), and only a small portion is news. 

I can almost guarantee you hate that experience. 

So why would you want to create that for your audience?

Instead of bombarding your website with self-serving initiatives, take responsibility for providing the reader with what they initially sought -- answers to questions, solutions to problems, etc.
