As a foreign-born Latina, who graduated from the Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Toledo, I personally know the cultural and academic challenges faced by those of underrepresented backgrounds. This includes learning in another culture, living in a different country, and, in my case, learning in a third language. I believe that my uncommon educational and professional background, along with a diversity of life experiences makes me unique. After a career in the automotive industry, working for two Tier 1 global suppliers as a process, design, and product engineer, I pursued additional educational interests in architecture, before moving to the Copper Country in 2014. Most recently, I have worked at Finlandia University and found many challenges and successes supporting three schools, 35 faculty, and many first-generation students. What is less evident is the unofficial role I play as a safe place for students, faculty, staff, and even administrators to voice their concerns and share their joys. In part, this may be due to my unique insight into academia, and understanding of both the faculty and student perspectives. But, certainly, it reflects my deep caring for others and my willingness to listen thoughtfully. As one of 37 women in my graduating class of 442 in the College of Engineering at the University of Toledo, and the only Latina, I recognize that I serve as a role model for others. As an advisor, I know that it would be tremendously fulfilling to work in a role combining all my experiences; as a student, a professional engineer, and my most recent academic position, guiding others toward success. In addition to my professional and academic experience, I also have a deep love for this community. I have expressed this passion in many capacities, including volunteering to teach art and art history to children and adults, painting murals in my town of Chassell and at Finlandia University, coordinating for the Canal Run, Bridge Fest, Parade of Nations, Heikinpäivä, and cooking community meals at St Matthew’s Chapel at Finlandia. In everything I do, I bring positivity and energy.
