Now in my 35th year in financial services, my role is that of principal and consultant at Finance North, and principal owner of Finance North Estate Planning Services. Having spent almost 14 years with Barclays, and 7 years at St James’ Place Wealth Management, Finance North was established in March 2008, and Finance North Estate Planning Services in 2016. After my wife's terminal cancer diagnosis in January 2010, we jointly set up ‘Elise for Life’, a fundraising appeal for The Christie Hospital in Manchester, where Elise was treated. 2 years and 10 months after she passed away in October 2010, the appeal exceeded its target, raising £1.175m. Following this, Challenge Cancer UK was born, supporting a mix of charities for male, female, children and teenagers. The aim of CCUK was to fund the whole cancer journey - awareness, prevention, research, treatment, support and care for patients and families of this dreadful disease, which affects so many of us. At the end of 2018, the final year of this 5 year project, our total fundraising efforts had risen to £2.6m, supporting more than 30 other cancer hospitals, organisations, and charities. Finance North offers protection and healthcare advice, specialising in employee benefits, business and individual protection. It is complemented by Finance North Estate Planning Services which provides Wills, Trusts, and Estate Planning advice to clients, meaning we offer lifetime and death planning services. Outside of the day jobs, my work is cut out trying to find lots of weird and wonderful ways to keep my little superstar son Adam entertained, amused, out of mischief, and alive! It's by far my toughest role to date.
