I am a graphic designer turned independent researcher and currently, a design researcher completing a PhD in Social Anthropology at the University of Bern in Switzerland. I was awarded a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship grant for 36 months from 2018-2021. Today, I help struggling students to secure fully-funded scholarships to study abroad, especially those from developing countries. I have over 10 years of working experience in academic settings in Kumasi, Ghana and Bern, Switzerland. __________ Here's my own personal experience: Only one yes was enough From 2016 to 2017, I applied to a number of scholarship opportunities abroad. 1/ A PhD programme in Australia Response: I was not offered admission and though I indicated that I had written a journal article which has been accepted for publication, it was a negative response. 2/ A PhD position in Sweden Response: After submission without getting a staff member to help me develop my proposal, I got a negative response. 3/ PhD studentship in the UK Response: I was invited for an interview but after the meeting, I was not offered a place. The reason being that the admission panel felt I did not understand the core concepts and methodology to help me complete the studentship on time. 4/ A PhD programme in Social Anthropology at a Swiss University Response: Positive 5/ A scholarship application for a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship programme Response: Negative response in May 2017. But I followed up and requested for feedback. I learned from my score and made a plan to contact those who had been successful in securing that scholarship in the past. Then I put in... 6/ A second application for a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship programme in November 2017. Response: I was granted a scholarship grant for the 2018/2019 academic year in May 2018. Then I had to submit my application for prolongation (an extension) for 2019/2020 academic year. My extension was granted. Finally, I submitted my last prolongation for 2020/2021 and that was granted as well. In conclusion, a NO from an application means: - New Opportunity; - Next Opportunity.
