One of the Clients Who Believed in Me When I Was Just Starting Out

When I first stepped into freelancing, I didn’t have a long client list, fancy testimonials, or years of reputation behind me. What I did have was determination, discipline, and the hope that someone would take a chance on me.

One of the first people to do that was Manu (Manjula) Bandara, a fellow Sri Lankan who had migrated to Australia and was running Fully Promoted Geelong at the time. Even though we had never met, he trusted me with his accounting and bookkeeping work purely because he wanted to support another Sri Lankan trying to build a career in Freelancing.

This photo was taken when he visited Sri Lanka during the period I was still working with him. long before he eventually sold his company. It was the first time we met in person, and it felt like meeting someone who genuinely believed in my potential.

I still remember negotiating my rate with him during those early days. I was new, but I stood my ground. Looking back now, that conversation taught me one of my earliest lessons in valuing my work and knowing my worth. And he respected that.

Even though our professional paths eventually went separate ways, we continue to stay connected here on LinkedIn. He remains one of the clients who gave me confidence when I needed it the most.

Clients and Small businesses who take chances on freelancers don’t just help with a project — they shape someone’s life. Their trust goes much further than they realise.

I also want to say this to every Sri Lankan freelancer who is just starting out:
Someone will take a chance on you too. Keep working on your craft, keep showing up, and don’t be afraid to value your work. Every journey starts with one person who believes in you.
