As an executive coach with over 27 years of corporate leadership experience, I understand the fear and uncertainty of leaving behind a long-established career. I, too, questioned my identity beyond my title and company, often wondering who I was outside my role at IBM. Like many, I waited too long. I saw the signs but ignored them. I hid from my deeper longings, accepting the negative consequences as a ‘natural course’ of being a busy employee. I was wrong. Finding a path through this pain and making the transition gave me back something I thought was long gone: My authentic happiness, along with a grounded identity free from corporate nonsense. In the many people I’ve supported, this is the one crucial step that sets the tone for a peaceful and confident transition: • Fully understand why this change is important to you and how it will positively impact your whole life. • See past the self-defeating narratives that assume you don’t deserve it and imagine it’s going to be painful and hard. • Accept that this isn’t about creating a fantasy outcome. It’s about meeting yourself honestly and deeply honoring what is genuine within you. • What about the negative impact?
