(SOURCE: FOOD EMPOWERMENT PROJECT) Food deserts can be described as geographic areas where residents’ access to affordable, healthy food options (especially fresh fruits and vegetables) is restricted or nonexistent due to the absence of grocery stores within convenient traveling distance.  According to a report prepared for Congress by the Economic Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture, about 2.3 million people (or 2.2 percent of all US households) live more than one mile away from a supermarket and do not own a car. [1] In urban areas, access to public transportation may help residents overcome the difficulties posed by distance, but economic forces have driven grocery stores out of many cities in recent years, making them so few and far between that an individual’s food shopping trip may require taking several buses or trains. In suburban and rural areas, public transportation is either very limited or unavailable, with supermarkets often many miles away from people’s homes. 

About me: I grew up in the grocery store business - we owned Bodegas.  For further historic information, my grandmother was the first woman to open the first grocery store in Garrochales, Barceloneta, Puerto Rico in the 1940's. My Father opened his first grocery store in 1962 at 1500 N. Paulina in Chicago, Illinois. My brother and I opened our first store in 1993 at 2738 W. North Ave., in Chicago, Illinois and continued to open other stores throughout Chicago.  Each of our locations were considered to be located in a food desert.  My goal with these interviews is to create the connection between food deserts and food insecurity.  To expose the champions in this fight and to further define food deserts, food mirages and food swamps.

In this innovative, futuristic, and totally rad concept, I get to play in a space that is near and dear to my heart - Grocery-tech Or tech-grocery! Whatever way you say it, Nourish + Bloom Market has created the first black-owned frictionless grocery store to be set up in Fayetteville, Georgia in the Trillith area - store number 1, that is!  

My role is Angel investor, technology and innovation.
