Smart Strategies for Employee Retention and Motivation

Ever been ghosted? Or maybe done a little ghosting yourself? 👻 since its Halloween, let’s talk about a different kind of “ghost”—the one where communication just… disappears. When you ghost someone, it’s more than just awkward silence. 

According to Joan (Joni) Hibdon in her book  I’m currently reading, “Leaders Guide to Mastering Feedback” ghosting can actually “inflict a psychological wound that erodes trust and a sense of human-to-human connection.”

It leaves people in the dark, creating a void that can be hard to shake. In a world that thrives on connection, clear and kind communication matters, especially in professional relationships. So, this Halloween season, maybe it’s time to stop ghosting and start talking—even when the conversation is tough.

Here are a few tips to avoid ghosting and keep communication respectful:

	1.	For Cold Reach Outs: If someone sends you a cold email and you’re not interested, a simple, polite decline works wonders. Something like, “Thank you for reaching out, but I’m not interested at this time.” It’s quick, clear, and leaves no loose ends.
	2.	For Interview Follow-Ups: If you’ve gone through an interview and know it’s not the right fit, don’t leave them hanging. You can send a brief message, like, “I appreciate the opportunity to interview, but I’ve decided to pursue other options. Thank you for your time.” This helps maintain a positive relationship in case paths cross in the future.
	3.	For Unsolicited Requests: Sometimes, people will reach out with requests that just aren’t for you. Instead of ignoring them, you can say, “I’m unable to accommodate this request, but I appreciate you thinking of me.” It closes the loop respectfully without dragging things out.

Remember, a little communication goes a long way in preserving trust and professionalism. Let’s stop ghosting and keep the conversations going—even when they’re short. 👻💬
