We’ve criticized Google before on many occasions for their bad iconography, but also praised them highly for their great UI. One such instance is Gmail's UI, specifically its sidebar UI.

Newbie designers struggle with things like balancing information density clearly and  making navigation intuitive. So, we decided to break down Gmail's sidebar UI to answer these queries.

This kinda breakdown is crucial for designers and developers who want to learn design basics and also some advanced stuff. 

The breakdown shows the excellent use of visual hierarchy, spacing, typography, and meticulous use of colors in the Gmail sidebar. Let’s break it down.

Which of these icon styles would you use in your design?

Google's stock tracking card is quietly brilliant design work.

Back when I started designing, I’d wonder about what font size I should use, how do I manage the spacing properly with so much information?
These kinds of questions were common, especially in the early stages of learning design.

Google handles complex data with their card UI quite impressively. A clear breakdown of this design could help many developers and designers create 
informative cards.

Here’s what Google did the best in designing the card UI -
🔸 Information layering: Google layered the information in the UI card exceptionally well. Company names are given the spotlight with bold letters while the follower count uses a subtle gray text that doesn't compete with attention.
🔸 Color coding: Each stock ticker gets its own branded color (Apple's gray, Google's red, Amazon's orange) creating instant visual recognition. The gains get a positive green color that makes it scannable at a glance.
🔸Spacing: The margins and padding create a consistent rhythm throughout the card. Nothing feels cramped, but space isn't wasted either. Each row has enough separation to feel distinct without any unnecessary gaps.
🔸 Typography: Three different font weights were used throughout the card. This creates a clear hierarchy that doesn’t feel chaotic. The different font choices serve the whole content structure.

The takeaway from this breakdown is that exceptional UIs make complex information feel effortless to understand and intuitive to interact.

Building overflow menus look so simple, but making them intuitive can be surprisingly challenging. How do you even organize multiple actions without overwhelming users?

Slack cracked the code with their canvases overflow menu UI. They've used strategic grouping and smart typography hierarchy to organize actions clearly, while thoughtful spacing naturally guides users through options without confusion.

Knowing the design tactics Slack uses can be immensely helpful for designers and developers working on similar interfaces.

Designing icons can be hard sometimes. But it’s not super complex once you’ve thought out the initial concept clearly.

Designing data heavy UIs without overwhelming the users is one of the toughest challenges in UI design.

Google Finance's "Top movers in your lists" table quietly solves the challenge. 

So we decided to break it down; so to help designers and developers working on similar data-heavy interfaces, dashboards, or any system that needs to present complex information clearly.

The breakdown covers Google's strategic use of color psychology, typography hierarchy, and spacing systems; all contributing to creating this great data table UI.

Breakdown of Google Finance's "Top movers in your lists"

Our Alarm clock icon looked pretty realistic with detailed bells, and a classic design. It worked fine, but something about it was bugging us.

Can we make this a bit cleaner?

So we simplified it. We refined the proportions, kept all the essential elements but ditched the extra detail. The new version feels fresher, more minimal.

The redesigned version integrates better with modern interface design. Less visual noise, cleaner aesthetics.

Sometimes realistic detail can compete with other elements on screen. For clean interfaces, wouldn't this simplified approach actually help the whole UI feel less cluttered? 

Do you think we lost something important in the simplification? Or does the cleaner approach actually make it more effective as a UI element?

We're currently redesigning one of our notification bell icons, and although we’ve iterated and compared them against others; we still felt a crucial part of our icon testing process was missing.

We found that instead of making decisions in isolation, testing our icon variations in real UIs gets us the real picture of how our end product is going to look like.

The same icon that looks perfect in a design file might not look good in actual user interfaces. Testing in real UIs reveals issues you'd never catch in standalone mockups.

Our real UI testing gave us insights on how the icons will be seen and used by our real users. 

Sometimes the best design decisions come from seeing your work in action. Getting into your user’s shoes makes you see what they see and how they use your products. From there, you can make adjustments and change certain aspects of your product to suit your users' needs.

Do you test your designs in real use-cases and intended contexts? What’s your approach?

We've been tweaking some of our icons lately, and looking at our Audio Book icons, we felt it might use some attention.

Looking at our old audiobook icon, you could tell it was about books and audio. But they seemed kinda busy and separate. 

The thing about audiobook icons is they need to tell two stories at once - "this is about books" and "this is about listening." 
Instead of cramming both elements together, we simplified them by getting them on top of each other.

The new version feels way more balanced. The book is cleaner, the audio part is more obvious, and together they just work better.

The best redesigns don't always add more, they make what's already there work better together.

We just refined two of our door icons, and the difference is pretty noticeable. Better proportions, cleaner handle placement, and more consistent stroke weights. The original versions worked fine, but something felt slightly off. So we got to work.

When an icon is designed right, they fade into the background and let users focus on what matters.
These refined versions do exactly that.
Now they feel more balanced, professional, and ready to be used in all kinds of UIs.

We've got a bunch of call icons in our icon library already, but still thought we should add another one to the arsenal.

We're comparing these two approaches for a new call icon and seemingly can't decide which direction we should go for.

Both work in stroke and solid versions, but they give off different vibes. 
Been staring at these for way too long and need some fresh perspective.

Does the organic curve on the right feel more natural for a communication icon, or do you prefer the cleaner geometric approach on the left?

The best way to design a clean calendar icon - Simple!

Icons shouldn’t keep people guessing. They should convey their meaning, instantly.

This version of our home icon was pretty minimal, but maybe a little too vague to be recognized in an instant.

Come our redesign, we've added a clear door element and better structure to the icon without losing the signature clean aesthetic of our icon library.

The redesign made a difference. Now instead of an abstract house shape, you get that instant "home" feeling. More intuitive, more familiar, but still beautiful.

We believe this redesign gave our home icons a more welcoming and recognizable feel.
