I'm Mat, the founder and CEO of WideBundle and WideReview. These are 2 Shopify Apps I built and took to $57,000 MRR.

I started this journey in 2017 and failed with 3 apps before building WideBundle in May 2020.

We didn't have that much information about building and growing Shopify Apps then.

So today I just want to be the guy I wanted to meet when I started ❤️

WideBundle is now Built For Shopify 💎

After more than 2 months into the process!

After a decline in our ranking, we needed to get that badge.

But it wasn't easy:

- We are an old app so changing our dashboard was complicated
- We have strong branding with colors that don't match Shopify guidelines
- We were not using Polaris (and we didn't want to use it)

For the last point, we kind of "copied" Polaris's design without even using it.

I love this flexibility, and when your entire app is built with something else, it doesn't make sense to rewrite all the code.

Anyway, this was only a small part of our big project for WideBundle in 2024.

We got the "Built For Shopify" for WideBundle in 2 months. 💎

Here is the impact it had on my app. 👇

A bit of context.

We started to lose ranks on our keywords and after analyzing the different apps, the number of reviews, velocity, etc... I came to a simple conclusion:

Built for Shopify badge now has a big impact on the ranking. The first few months, I didn't want to work on it because the impact wasn't confirmed.

But now everything has changed.

We started working on the badge more than 2 months ago.

And we had a few challenges:

- We were not using Polaris (harder to get the badge)
- We were an old app with many features (many things to change)
- We're built with vanilla JS

But this simple tech stack also helped us. For example, we never had to worry about LCP. The only thing we had to improve was CLS and it wasn't that complicated.

So we quickly moved on to the second and most complicated stage: submitting the app and updating the design.

What's complicated is that we don't know when the team will give the feedback.

Some back and forth took 2 hours, some others took 2 weeks. And during this time you don't know:

- If they checked your app
- If something is wrong
- If they will contact you soon

And what was hard sometimes was to understand what they wanted us to change. It can be challenging with just a screenshot and a small text. Since the email is a "no-reply," you can't ask for help.

We finally managed to get that badge and what they said was true: You don't need Polaris to be built for Shopify.

Here is the impact it had on my app:

- The badge gives merchants trust
- You will increase your ranking on some keywords

As I suspected, getting the badge boosted our ranking for some keywords.

For example, over the past few months, we slowly went from 6th to 18th for one keyword.

After getting the badge, we went to the 9th position overnight.

BUT.

I can't say that it changed something on my installs. The number is still the same.

The reason, in my opinion, is simple: The Shopify App Store isn't our main acquisition channel.

So obviously improving it wouldn't increase our installs a lot.

But let's be even more specific!

Before BFS: The percent of installs coming from specific keywords where we had lost positions was 10%

After BFS: The percent of installs coming from specific keywords where we had lost positions was 14%

So overall we don't really see the impact, but technically, we had one.

The Wide Event - A Shopify Partner Event for Merchants and Partners

It's been some time since I didn't do a live in the Shopify App Founders community!

But now I have my Facebook account back! After 6 months!

I announced the live yesterday and didn't expect 60 total people to show up.

- It wasn't prepared
