Many VCs get a board seat when they invest.

But most of the people that take that seat, have never been founders themselves.

It can often be their 1st time on a board.

Having now set up a myself business, I've seen first hand that it’s completely different to being an employee. Night and day.

And it made me think.

A board seat is a big role. 

Literally helping to shape the future of a company.

In VCs, often the Managing Partner of the firm has been a founder before.

But many of the employees haven’t.

And a lot of the time the board seats go to those who have never been founders.

Personally, if I was running a SaaS business (and had taken investment) I’d be looking for a board that I could spar. 

People who had been there and done it themselves.

How important would that be for you?

I wanted to launch a business years ago. But I’m so glad I waited. 

I didn't realise it then. But I wasn’t ready. 

Being a sales leader and having 10+ years of VP experience everyday has been so important for me.

And I’m a much better entrepreneur because of it. 

And I have to admit that I took for granted lots of the learnings VP Sales roles at the time.

The most important learnings were:

- How to build structure
- The ability to get executive buy in
- Knowing how to build repeatability
- Skills needed to build a GTM motion 
- How to be a leader
- Time/task management (underrated!) 

On top of that, and what I underestimated at the most at the time, was the domain experience I was gaining.

The domain experience that Cosmic has been built on, it’s now part of our IP!

It enables us to win new business in a competitive market.

And we win business by bringing real value to the table.

We recently interviewed all our clients at Cosmic Partners and one of the biggest reasons they decided to work with us was because of our domain experience.

Founders, what experience do you use now from previous roles?

I’ve seen people hire a VP of Sales too early. And too late.

But when is the right time?

Knowing when to bring in an executive sales leader is tough.

There are so many variables. 

Especially when the failure rate is so high.

Around 70% of VP Sales hire don’t make it to 12 months.

With the the average tenure being 17 months. 

I’ve advised lots of VC portfolio companies and for me, you know it’s the right time when:

- You are probably at 1m ARR

- Your value prop is well defined

- You have a good number of customers who have bought your product and use it for EXACTLY the same use case

- Clear PFM and have some hired some SDRs/AEs who have proven some repeatability already

- There is budget to build the team out further

Only then is it worth even thinking about a VP Sales. 

I spend lots of my time advising Founders to keep owning the sales function for longer as they are just too early!
