After some very productive years toiling in London, my boy Alexei Vink and I hot-tailed across Europe by bicycle until we reached Istanbul. Well I don't mind telling you: Istanbul was pretty great. But baby, we had to blow that joint and strike out east. Rolling quick and true we dodged dogs, slept in ditches and drank a lot of tea until they wouldn't let us into Iran. So turning left (real sudden like) we blew north to Georgia and Azerbaijan.

After wrestling our way onto an industrial freighter, we crossed the Caspian and landed in Kazakhstan. Well, we had to blow that joint too. We smashed east again, waking early and bedding down late, and escaped the heat of the day by hiding in irrigation ditches like a couple of handsome hobos stealing kisses from camels as we went. Uzbekistan was a blast - we were on the golden road to Samarkand, the spirit of James Elroy Flecker in hot pursuit - and then, hot damn, we were in Tajikistan crossing the Pamirs. Eating yak butter and walnuts and living the dream. I left a little bit o' my heart in those mountains. Afghanistan - next time, next time.

Then Kyrgyzstan - the best market in all of Asia, some cold beers and more visa disputes - we didn't stay so long. Again: next time baby, next time. We flew our asses (and our bikes, sweet Bernadette and the speedy Tornado) across the Tien Shan and the Himalaya to Hanoi, Vietnam where we ate all the mango that we could get our pudgy mitts on. 

Then it was just a gentleman's roll south to soft shell crab rolls and Saigon, where this fair author makes his scene.

I read #books, drink #coffee, ride #bikes and make up #marketing. 

I'm the Head of Creative Strategy at @Earnest.  I know it sounds like a made up job. 

It is a made up job. 

All jobs are made up.

I'm like a labradoodle. Only instead of being part gun dog and part snooty poodle, I'm 50% creative director and 50% strategy director.  I like my job. I also like running in fields and eating things I find on the floor, like an actual labradoodle. 

What it means is that I spend most of my day helping the fine people at Earnest translate client needs/wants/issues into creative solutions via strategic thinking. 

I think the world is weird and getting weirder.  I think strategy needs to rise to meet the weirdness and I think creative needs to roll around in it. Weird is good. Weird is what sets us apart from boring.

Sometimes it feels like life is spooling and unspooling over and over and over again. Errant strands of wool. I can't even knit. Have you seen how hard knitting is? Sure, make a jumper with chopsticks.

I have just seen three posts, back-to-back, complaining about the state of this website.  Cool.  My response to all of them would be: stop f*cking whingeing, and instead make and write things you'd want to see.

Our industry has become unbearably whingey. 

Who wants to go on a date with someone who just sits there complaining, raising themselves above the problem?

Nobody wants to work with people who just spend their time sh*tting on things and complaining about the work was better in the olden days or the internet used to be fun.

Personally, i've come to enjoy this website a lot.  It's full of smart people who write and share good stuff.  Sure it's full of swill and guff merchants but - and this bit is very simple and very important - just block them.  

If you hate the rubbish i fart out into the world you should block me too.  But you'll all feel a lot better if you stop whingeing about there not being any good things to look at (for free!) and start making good things to look at (for free!).
