I stay involved in youth mental health and nonprofit leadership work. My mission is simple. Give the next generation stronger systems than we had.

Mom knew something the doctors didn’t.

At 7, I couldn’t sit still.
Teachers complained.
The school counselor said I need help.
The doc said medication.

Mom said no.

Not because Jan was anti-medicine,
but because she saw what they missed.

What if everything I needed to know about leadership, I learned at circus camp?

I'm writing a TED talk about exactly that.

At 8 years old, I was terrible at juggling. 
Dropped every third ball. 
Couldn't keep my balance on the tightrope. 
Face-planted off the trapeze more times than I can count.

But those failures? 
They were teaching me how to run companies.

Juggling taught me to keep moving when I drop things. You don't stop and stare at the fallen ball. 
You keep the other two in motion. 
Same with business… when one deal falls through, you keep the pipeline flowing.

Balance showed me that true stillness comes from constant adjustment. 
Standing still on that wire meant hundreds of micro-movements every second. 

Just like leading a team through uncertainty.

And falling? 
That taught me the ground isn't the enemy, just a place to reset. 
Every face-plant was data. 
Every bruise was feedback.

These lessons show up every day now.

When a client project goes sideways, I keep the other pieces moving.
When market conditions shift, I make the micro-adjustments.
When a strategy fails, I hit the ground and bounce back with better data.

But the best part of writing this talk hasn't been connecting these dots.

It's been the conversations it's sparked.

Old friends from that circus camp reaching out with stories I'd forgotten. 

“Remember when you finally nailed the triple juggle and immediately tried to teach everyone else?"

New connections sharing their own childhood-to-boardroom parallels. Turns out, a lot of CEOs learned their first lessons in unexpected places.

This talk about play and wonder is turning out to be quite playful, and full of wonder, itself.

Not to mention how helpful these skills are for being a father.
