This role is a dream opportunity where I combine my two professional passions: software development in PHP with developer education. 

As someone with a passion for writing code and educating others about code (as my motto says: "Write Code. Teach Code"), I create short and long-form technical tutorials for the Twilio blog on a range of technical topics. Ones that help PHP-focused developers improve their skills and hone their craft, ones that often, though not always, tie-in with Twilio's technologies.

From HTTP calls to caching with Memcache, from managing application secrets to the Slim framework, if you or your development team need to improve their development skills, come and learn with me.

In addition, I work with a group of passionate external contributors who create excellent PHP tutorials on a regular basis by: 

1. Reviewing the underlying code for accuracy, recency, and relevance.
2. Reviewing grammar and voice so that the tutorials are clear, correct, and succinct.
3. Reviewing the narrative so that developers read more engaging tutorials.

It's a privilege to have the opportunity to help guide and mentor them and to help them help other developers learn.

PHP Software Engineer of Technical Content

During my, almost, 1.5 years in the role, I researched and wrote nineteen tutorials (in English and German) on a number of technologies with a, broadly, PHP-centric perspective. The articles included sending and receiving SMS using a number of PHP's leading frameworks, building a PHP and Python-powered weather station with a Raspberry Pi, creating WhatsApp chatbots, validating phone numbers, and authenticating uploads.

The articles all focused around two key aims: to help the wider PHP community grow their software development skills, and to educate them about the excellent technology stack that Twilio provides. 

In addition to the content that I authored, I grew a community of external contributors who contributed a range of articles to help the wider PHP community, covering everything from introducing them to Test-driven Development, to showing them how to market their skills to a wide audience by building professional landing pages.

Last — but definitely not least — I helped other authors on the Twilio Voices team (and other teams within Twilio) by reviewing their articles from both a technical and a voice (spelling, grammar, terminology, etc) perspective, to help ensure they were of the highest quality.

During the course of the role, I planned and out lead the migration of ownCloud's documentation from SphinxDoc and reStructuredText to the Antora platform and the AsciiDoc file format.

I’m also an experienced online educator, technical writer, and trainer, having written over 150 articles, published 3 books and 6 online courses, and launched two podcasts in the last ten years.

It might seem odd for a software developer to be so communicative, but then, I've always enjoyed meaningful conversations and sharing what I know with others. The satisfaction that comes from seeing someone else "get" a concept, be able to code that much easier, and to see that satisfaction in their eyes or hear it in their voice is a never-ending sense of joy for me; one that continues to motivate me to this day.
