Everyone said “no” to Nishant Sharma.
And yet Nishant built a £200m whisky portfolio.
How? Pure tenacity.

Here’s what I mean: When Nishant’s company Rutland Square Spirits was days away from running out of money, he didn’t give up. 

Instead, he did what a lot of entrepreneurs do when their back is against the wall: try to survive.

He sent DMs, emails, messages, and connection requests to anyone who could open a door or take a call. Investors. Operators. Industry people. Friends of friends. And almost everyone said no.

Then took the advice of a friend and reached out to Dr. Vivek Oberoi for just an hour of his time.

And to his surprise, Vivek actually said yes.

And that one hour? It changed his entire life.

Vivek invested in Nishant, and that vote of confidence opened doors, helped raise more capital, and took Rutland from “scrambling to survive” to a top whisky brand.

Now, I haven’t built a £200m whisky portfolio.
But I’m sharing Nishant’s journey today because, as an entrepreneur, his story resonated with me deeply.

You see, for the last year or so of my life I've been steadily working on my own passion project. My book: Untangling AI.

I’ve been writing it while:

And through some of the most challenging moments of my life.

The first being a 6.9-magnitude earthquake that shook Cebu in September last year, leaving buildings damaged, communities displaced, and our entire team rattled.

And the second? Typhoon Kalmaegi.

Kalmaegi didn't just dump a record amount of rain in the city. It completely disrupted clean water access, cut us off from some of our team members, and knocked out electricity across entire blocks.

Yes. I can't tell you the number of times I doubted my ability to see this through or had people on the outside say things to me like:
“Matt… are you sure you want to write a book right now?”

But here’s what I can tell you: I didn't stop.
The more I heard “no,” the more I wrote anyway.

Because Untangling AI isn’t a vanity project for me. It’s my Rutland.
It’s my attempt to give founders, leaders, and teams a clear, practical way to cut through the AI noise. 

It’s my attempt to help you understand what actually matters, what to ignore, and how to use technology to build better businesses and better careers, without burning your people out.

That’s why I’m genuinely excited to get it out into the world.

And I’m thrilled to say that it’s coming out soon, with less than a month to go.

Zerodha made approximately $495M in net profit in FY25.
And what I respect most is that this didn’t start with a marketing playbook.
There were no paid ads. No promos. No “growth hacks.”

This came from a lean operating model built on systems, automation, and trust.

✔ Systems in the form of clear workflows, decision architecture, and tight execution discipline.
✔ Automation in the form of software that removes manual work, reduces errors, and keeps operations tight.
✔ And trust in the form of a pricing structure that removes friction and puts transparency up front.

Yes, when Nithin & Nikhil Kamath built Zerodha, they didn’t approach these fundamentals as afterthoughts.They baked them into the business from the start. 

You can see it in how they operate, and even in how their brand name spells it out: Zero + “rodha” (barriers). 

And that’s how every founder should approach scale in this next era of artificial intelligence.

They should start by removing barriers in their operating model first, then let 
AI amplify what’s already working. Instead of stacking tools on top of a messy setup and wondering why nothing sticks once it's stood up.
