14 million people use it daily to “vote on” what new flavors Coke should create.

Here's how Coke stealthily turns millions of customers into an R&D department. 

In 2009 Coke launched something called the Freestyle machine.

If you've been to Five Guys or a movie theater in the last decade you've probably used one.

It's that fancy touchscreen soda fountain with over 100 different drink combos (my go to is cherry sprite zero).

But here's what most people don't realize...

Every single pour from every single machine gets sent directly to Coke HQ in Atlanta.

Today there are over 50,000 Freestyle machines worldwide.

They pour roughly 14 million drinks every single day.

That's 14 million data points telling Coke exactly what flavors people are mixing, what time of day they're drinking and which locations are mixing what.

Chris Hellmann, VP of Coke Freestyle, put it simply: "Today it's a billion dollar business."

But the real story here isn't about selling sodas.

It's about how Coke turned casual soda drinkers into the largest product development focus group on the planet.

The data showed something interesting...

People were consistently adding cherry flavor to their Sprite over and over again at thousands of locations nationwide.

In 2017 Coke did something they had never done before.

They took a flavor combination that only existed on the Freestyle machine and put it in bottles and cans.

Sprite Cherry became the first nationally distributed product created entirely from Freestyle data.

Bobby Oliver, Director of Sprite, said: "There's proven data that people actually love it."

Then they did it again.

In 2019 they noticed people were mixing Coke with orange and vanilla flavors. 

So they launched Coke Orange Vanilla.

In 2020 they found that Cherry Vanilla Coke was the most popular hybrid drink across all 50,000 machines.

The data showed 105.5 million cans worth had been poured since 2017. 

So they bottled it and turned it into a new product for stores.

The results speak for themselves.

Restaurants with Freestyle machines see drink sales increase by 8% and customer traffic increase by 3%.

Research showed that nearly 2 out of 3 people say access to a Freestyle machine influences which restaurant they choose.

Coke turned a drink dispenser into both a marketing tool and an R&D laboratory.

Here's the takeaway for marketers...

Your customers are constantly telling you what they want. 

The billion dollar question is are you actually collecting that data.

Coke built a system where people volunteer their preferences without even thinking about it. 

Every pour is secretly a vote.

What data are you leaving on the table?

What if I told you one of the greatest marketing campaigns in history happened in 1756?

King Frederick the Great of Prussia had a crisis on his hands.

Famine was spreading across his kingdom with grain crops failing and people dying.

He knew potatoes could end the starvation. 

They grew fast, thrived in poor soil and packed more nutrition per acre than wheat or rye.

But his people believed potatoes were disgusting and dangerous. 

So Frederick did what most leaders would do and issued an order.

On March 24, 1756 he passed the Kartoffelbefehl (aka The Potato Edict), which commanded Prussian farmers to plant potatoes or face consequences.

Their response was basically "make us."

The town of Kolberg officially replied: "The things have neither smell nor taste, not even the dogs will eat them, so what use are they to us?"

Frederick's direct approach failed.

Most people would have doubled down by threatening harsher punishment or forcing compliance.

Frederick was smarter.

He recognized a psychological truth that marketers still struggle with today. You cannot force people to want something.

In 1966, psychologist Jack Brehm would call this "psychological reactance." 

When we feel our freedom is threatened, we instinctively resist.

Frederick figured this out two centuries early by watching his own stubborn peasants.

He stopped pushing potatoes on the common people entirely and instead he declared them a "royal vegetable" reserved for aristocrats only.

He planted potato fields around his palace and stationed armed guards to protect them during the day.

But he secretly ordered those guards to be careless, look the other way and conveniently nap at night.

Because what happens when something is guarded and forbidden?

People want it more.

The peasants who refused potatoes as peasant food became obsessed with them as royal food. 

They started sneaking into the fields at night and "stealing" the potatoes.

Then they planted the stolen potatoes in their own gardens. 

Frederick turned rejection into demand without changing the product at all.

This is the scarcity principle that Robert Cialdini would later identify in his book Influence (a must read).

Humans value what is limited or hard to obtain and assign higher worth to things that are exclusive or restricted.

Frederick combined scarcity with status association…

If the king wanted them protected, they must be valuable.

He leveraged basic psychology centuries before we had names for these principles.

Here's what marketers can learn from Frederick:

🥔 Stop pushing. Start pulling. Create desire instead of demanding attention.
🥔 Use scarcity intentionally. Limited access increases perceived value.
🥔 Associate with status. Premium positioning attracts rather than repels.
🥔 Work with human psychology, not against it. Reactance is real. Forbidden things become irresistible.

These principles never changed and never will.

The only thing that does change is the platform and medium.

This might look like an internal VW document about creating ads, but it was actually one of the most brilliant ads ever created.

It was written by copywriter Julian Koenig at the legendary agency DDB (the agency Mad Men modeled off of) and it completely changed the game by doing the exact opposite of what everyone else was doing.

Here are 3 lessons you should take from this ad that still hold up today:

1. Radical Transparency: They admitted that some drivers "only managed 28 m.p.g." The reality is if you admit a flaw (the blemish effect) people will actually believe you when you claim a strength. If you claim your product is perfect (or only show 5 star reviews) you lose trust instantly.

2. Anti-Jargon: They openly mocked the "orbital cushioning" fluff used by competitors. Most marketers try to sound smart with complex words, but just end up confusing the customer. If your ad requires a person to think hard to understand it they are going to just skip it.

3. Respect The Reader: "Don't shout. He can hear you." You don't need to do crazy stunts, TikTok trends or use fake scarcity to get attention. You just need to speak to the prospect like an adult and solve their problem.

What is one of your favorite ads from the 20th century?

A 2 cent mint increased tips by 21%, but only when served a specific way.

Here’s the story behind one of my favorite experiments that proves the power of reciprocity. 

Whether you’re a waiter or a marketer, you’re going to want to save this one. 

In 2002 a team of psychologists wanted to test something that seems obvious (but not enough people do).

They partnered with restaurants in New York and ran two separate experiments  using real servers and real customers.

Their goal was simple.

Find out if giving customers a small unexpected gift would actually increase tips.

What they discovered was way more interesting than a simple yes or no…

In Experiment 1 they had servers give one mint when they delivered the check.

Average tips jumped from 15.06% to 17.84%.

That’s an 18% increase in tips for a piece of candy that cost pennies (not a bad ROI).

But here’s where it gets really interesting.

In Experiment 2 they tested three different ways of giving mints to customers.

And the results revealed something most marketers completely miss.

They tested three conditions with 80 different dining parties.

Condition 1: Server gives one mint with the check.
Result: Tips increased by about 3%.

Condition 2: Server gives two mints with the check.
Result: Tips increased by 14%.

You’d expect double the mints to mean double the increase right?

Nope…It was more than 4x higher.

But wait until you see what happened with Condition 3…

In condition 3 the server went back to giving just one mint with the check.

Then they started walking away from the table before stopping and saying something like:

“You know what? You’ve been such great customers tonight. Here’s an extra mint just for you.”

They gave the same exact amount of mints as condition 2, but tips jumped 21% above the control group.

The exact same gift produced 50% better results just because of HOW it was delivered.

The researchers conclusion was that it wasn’t about the mints at all.

It was about personalization.

The act of “coming back” with an extra mint made customers feel special.

And that feeling of being singled out triggered something deep in human psychology.

It trigger the norm of reciprocity.

When someone does something nice for us we feel an almost irresistible urge to return the favor.

It’s wired into our DNA. We can’t help it.

But what most marketers completely miss is the size of the gift matters way less than the feeling behind it.

So how do you actually apply this to your ads and marketing?

 1. Lead with value before you ask for anything in return.
 2. Make your free offer feel personal and specific (not generic).
 3. Add unexpected bonuses after the initial offer is accepted.
 4. Frame every gesture as genuine appreciation.
 5. Time the “extra” to feel spontaneous and unplanned.

The psychology behind all of this is actually pretty simple.

People don’t reciprocate gifts.

They reciprocate feelings.

Make someone feel genuinely valued and they’ll value you back.
