Maximilian Riege is a manager and attorney in the AI, FinTech and digital identity sectors. Max is Chief Risk Officer at HAWK:AI, a leading provider of anti-financial crime software. At HAWK:AI Max oversees the risk and regulatory functions, including legal and information security. Max also serves as Co-CEO of the Berlin Finance Initiative (BFI). Previously, Max served as Chief Representative & General Counsel at Verimi, the European identity platform; a joint venture of Allianz, Daimler, Deutsche Bank, Lufthansa, Samsung, Telekom, VW and other international corporations. Max oversaw the Finance, HR and Legal & Compliance departments and successfully led multiple rounds of financing. He was instrumental in obtaining Verimi's Payment Service Provider licenses (ZAG) and regulatory approval (KJM) for its age verification functionality. As Partner at Hambach & Hambach, Max advised leading providers of digital payment and financial services, BitCoin, international online gaming providers and regulatory authorities. His representation resulted in the first online casino and sports betting licenses ever issued in Germany. Furthermore, Max was the first European to serve as Wagner Fellow at the NYU Pollack Center for Law & Business. His research focused on individual accountability for corporate wrongdoing in antitrust law. Max advised the German Federal Government's Commission on Competition Law 4.0 on antitrust and platform economy. He is co-author of the legal commentary “Gambling and Gaming Law in the Media” and a speaker and moderator at international conferences. Max holds an LL.M. in Competition, Innovation, and Information Law from New York University School of Law. He also studied law at the Universities of Passau and Bonn and the Complutense University of Madrid. Max is admitted to practice law in Germany and New York.
