London gave me the opportunities to go from the council estate in Tooting where I grew up, to being Mayor of the greatest city in the world. 
 
My parents moved to London from Pakistan in the 1960s. I was state-school educated and went on to study Law at the University of North London. Before entering politics, I worked as a human rights lawyer for more than 10 years, helping to build and run a firm of 50 employees.
 
My political career began in 1994, when I became a councillor in the London Borough of Wandsworth until 2006. I was then elected as the MP for Tooting in 2005. In 2008, I was appointed Minister of State for Communities and later became Minister of State for Transport, becoming the first Muslim to attend Cabinet. I was also Crossrail Minister and then Shadow Secretary for Justice and Constitutional Affairs from 2010 until 2015. 
 
In 2013 I was appointed Shadow Minister for London, and in 2014 and 2015 led the Labour Party campaign in London in the local council, European and then General Elections. I was honoured to be elected Mayor of London in May 2016 with 1.3 million votes–the largest personal mandate of any politician in UK history.
 
In 2021 I was re-elected as Mayor of London and feel truly humbled to serve this incredible city for another three years. I still wake up every morning passionate about delivering my promise to Londoners: to make London a fairer city where all Londoners get the opportunities that our city gave to me and my family. I’m working hard to improve the lives of every single person in our city, regardless of your borough or background, race or religion, postcode or political affiliation. This is my promise to you: to deliver a brighter future for London and to stand up for London.

Fantastic news for London: the DLR Extension to Thamesmead is going ahead with backing from the Government.
 
It's something I have long called for, and will help create jobs for Londoners and help deliver tens of thousands of homes in London.

London is Europe's powerhouse for life sciences and is now the front runner to become the world capital of the sector.
 
This year alone, London’s life sciences industry has attracted £1.6 billion in venture capital investment, more than Paris, Stockholm and Berlin combined. With thousands of industry leaders, innovators, investors and biotech companies gathering for London Life Sciences Week, our momentum has never been stronger.

Whilst elsewhere in the world, we are seeing the rejection of truth, outright hostility towards science, and the gutting of vital research funding, here in London we remain unwavering in our values. We are, and will always be, unashamedly pro-science, pro-innovation, and pro-progress.

Construction has started on 10 new Elizabeth line Class 345 trains at Alstom’s Derby Works, which will help to make transport even better for Londoners.

It was a real privilege to join colleagues and volunteers as we marked the 20th anniversary of Mitzvah Day, the UK’s largest faith-led day of social action. 
I was proud to stand alongside Jewish, Muslim and Christian colleagues to pack surplus food boxes for Londoners in need.

Ahead of Remembrance Day, we gathered at City Hall to honour the brave men and women who serve to defend our freedom and democracy.

It’s a time to pause and reflect on the immense sacrifices they made.

A heartfelt thank you to all the current and former members of our Armed Forces who joined us. We are grateful for your service.

Too many survivors of domestic abuse have nowhere safe to go.
 
Backed by support from the Mayor's Office for Policing And Crime (MOPAC), a new pilot with Women's Aid Federation of England and Airbnb will offer survivors and their children free emergency accommodation for up to two weeks.
