It can feel a bit too much sometimes. Sharing what “Overwhelm” means to me sparked some healing conversations at Natalia Talkowska’s Creative Evening. 

I thought I'd share them here too, in case these are the words that some of us need to hear right now.

Overwhelmed. Why does that sometimes feel like that’s the theme of adulthood?

At times, life feels like a string of events where we’re just being overwhelmed by one after another.

If you run a business,
If you run a team,
If you run an event,
If you run a family
I’m sure you know what I mean.

As a kid, I was told that God would never give us more than we can handle.

As a grown-up with my own kids, I’ve experienced going past breaking point a few times. Those are the times that I feel like I was given more than I can handle. 

Now I’ve come to realise two things:

First - it’s inevitable. We’ll always find ourselves in moments where we feel overwhelmed. 

I used to see these moments as failures. Like, dude, you’re a grown-ass man. Get your act together.

But the truth is that the feeling of being overwhelmed often comes from situations beyond your control.

So instead of seeing them as failures, I’ve reframed these moments of feeling overwhelmed as rights of passage. 

They will come. And you’re going to get through it.

If moments of feeling overwhelmed are inevitable – the second thing I’ve realised is that I better damn well stack the odds in my favour for when they do happen.

The way to do that is simple – you build relationships with like-minded people and surround yourself with them.

Because when you feel overwhelmed, the only way out is to go through the moment. 

Because when you feel overwhelmed, you need to know that you aren’t going through that moment alone. 

Because when you feel overwhelmed, you need people to help you lift what is more than you can handle. 

So, find like-minded people. Find your tribe. 

Stay connected with them, in real life over coffees or online over WhatsApp and LinkedIn messages. 

And put the effort in to be there for them as they will be putting the effort to be there for you.

And maybe then there’s some truth to what I was told as a kid. As long as we have our tribe with us, we won’t be given more than we can handle together.

When businesses support one another, it’s a beautiful thing. No strings attached, just the desire to see each other succeed.

This is why I’m so thankful for Sasha Walters and the team at Design District London. 

I’ve recently started a LinkedIn Group for my local networking community. Between GreenwichB2B founder Marco Weinand and I, we wanted it to be a place where local businesses uplift and support each other, in between the monthly meetings we have over a pint at the pub.

Getting people to utilise the LinkedIn group won’t happen overnight, but a little incentive would help. What if you can also win a prize from a local business by posting an intro in the group? That would give people the nudge to post and a business in the area would get visibility as well.

When I reached out to Sasha about the idea, she was immediately on board. Not only do the winners get a free lunch, but a week of free hotdesk coworking space at Design District, too. Thanks, Sasha 🙌

If you don't have a community, go find yourself one. It's this spirit of community and collaboration that is exactly what this networking thing is about.

I risked everything to speak at brightonSEO. Yes, that was my opening joke – but there’s some truth to it.

6 months before, I made a risky decision to focus my business on helping others on their LinkedIn. 

1 month before, I ripped up a battle-tested talk and started the whole thing over again.

I’m so glad I did it. We did some laughing, we did some thinking, and we gave LinkedIn - the somehow still overlooked platform - a serious look.

Networking used to cripple me with fear. You don't have to scroll too far back on my timeline to see how much I dreaded it 😫 

The relationships I’ve built here on LinkedIn gave me the confidence to overcome this fear. Then every new connection made at events is further strengthened on LinkedIn. It’s a beautiful cycle of growth and connection that keeps on giving.

My only regret from yesterday’s The Agency Collective | B Corp Certified event is that I didn’t take enough pictures. I genuinely got lost in the moment and forgot to pull out the camera 😅

Get over the cringe of posting selfies. When people follow you on LinkedIn, you are the story they're most interested in.

When they don’t see you in your posts, it feels like something’s missing. But when you put yourself into the story, you bring that energy of the place around you with it. That selfie makes the audience want to be there with you.

So don't be afraid to turn the camera back around on yourself 📸

Why does one LinkedIn post get more impressions than another? Here’s what I’ve discovered working with my clients.

When your content gets high engagement but low impressions, that post is only relatable to 1st-degree connections who know you.

But when your post gets high engagement *and* high impressions, it shows that your target audience from outside your network finds it relatable, too. They’re paying attention to what you have to say even without knowing you.

That’s some serious impact.

Content relatability doesn’t get talked about enough. And it doesn’t just come from “thought leadership”, it also comes from showing your personality, your values, and your community leadership in action.

There’s a lot of talk about “hooks”, but a hook is the final punch we throw. If it’s not set up right, that punch isn’t going to land.

If your posts aren’t reaching more people than you think they should, you’re probably right. We just need to surface that relatability so your posts are set up for success.
