I led a session about growth mindset at our company offsite last week. Not a "what is," but rather a "how to" - and here's what the group came up with:

How do you tell if you (or someone else) has a *fixed* mindset?:

- Ruminates in negativity (about the product, business, or people)
- Doesn't set goals for themselves
- Waits for someone to tell them what to do
- Leans on "it's not my job" more often than not
- Points fingers / doesn't take responsibility or ownership
- Doesn't ask for feedback / doesn't take feedback well

What are some signs that you (or someone else) has a *growth* mindset?:

- Constantly asks for feedback to improve
- Sets personal and professional goals 
- Asks how they can help (even if it isn't their domain)
- Seeks to understand (curious) rather than judge
- Highly collaborative
- Shares lessons learned (even if they aren't "wins")
- Acting / moving forward, even in the face of uncertainty
- Gets energized when faced with new challenges

The number one criteria for building a growth mindset?: Self-awareness

Being able to spot the behaviors is the first step of building your growth mindset muscle, so that you can recognize when you're in a place of "fixed" and can move yourself into "growth" quickly. 

Here are three ways you can start building self-awareness this week:

1. Set goals for your week; identify the biggest things that will move the needle forward and start actioning
2. Ask for feedback from your manager / another leader about your work, your collaboration with others, and your career as a whole. 
3. Reflect on that feedback and plan your upcoming week/month

Just getting into this habit of self-awareness and reflection can be a big unlock. And no, asking ChatGPT for feedback doesn't count! 🤣
