Tarbela Dam in Pakistan is one of the world’s largest earth-fill dams, built on the Indus River for hydropower, irrigation, and flood control.

Its spillway works by releasing excess water safely through gated openings into a specially designed stilling basin. The basin uses baffle blocks, a hydraulic jump, and energy-dissipation structures to slow the high-velocity flow before it returns to the river, preventing erosion and protecting the dam’s downstream face.

Some species of birds, including swifts and hummingbirds, use their saliva in the building of their nests. The swift, for example, projects a large amount of saliva against a surface, such as a tree trunk, providing an anchor for the nest. They then build up the nest in continuing layers of bird saliva along with the odd inclusion of objects such as feathers, twigs, and other plant material. The resulting nest is a fairly smooth, deep, bowl shape. Saliva is an ideal building component as it is thick and dries quickly.

To begin motion, the train moves forward slowly on these wheels, allowing the magnets beneath the train to interact with those of the guideway. Vibration in concrete, often referred to as concrete consolidation, plays a crucial role in improving the quality and durability of concrete structures. This process involves applying mechanical vibration to freshly poured concrete to remove trapped air bubbles and excess water. The primary purpose of this vibration is not to remove water but to improve the density and strength of the concrete by eliminating voids and improving the distribution of aggregates. However, indirectly, vibration can help excess water escape from the concrete mix.

This flexibility enhances the aircraft wing's resilience against turbulent airflows.

In this video, you can see the bending, deflection, and resilience testing of the Airbus A350 wing under applied loads. The wing is so flexible it can bend close to 90 degrees, with its tip deflecting up to about 5.2 meters.
