Hive Cancer Support

Pink Ladies Cancer Support Group is a registered breast cancer charity based in Northern Ireland. During my time with the Pink Ladies, I worked as an educational scientist where I provided community based health awareness trainings. This was an extension of my PhD research, where I developed effective public risk communication strategies for harmful chemicals associated with cancer. 

I had a variety of roles within the Pink Ladies, one of which was hosting the annual World Cancer Day conference. As the host, I organized the conference schedule, promoted the conference on social media, and interviewed guest speakers.

Educational Scientist

ProtectED EU Funded Project

As the social media representative for the prestigious ProtectED EU funded MSCA project, I handled all social media output on Twitter and Facebook. This included the dissemination of research findings, marketing for conferences, and building community among members of the project. In this role, I planned and scheduled content, co-ordinated with similar projects to build online networks, and stayed up to date with the latest trends in social media marketing.

My research explored the topic of public risk perceptions of endocrine disrupting chemicals in the environment and food chain for the development of efficient risk communication strategies. I used qualitative and quantitative methodology and analysis to explore the awareness and perceived risk of endocrine disruptor exposure by the general public.

In this role, I developed many skills as a scientific writer including publishing my work in an accredited journal. I also gave professional presentations at conferences.

Melissa Kelly, PhD is the founder of Sober Social Ireland and a postdoctoral researcher in the field of public health. 

After completing her PhD, Melissa worked as an educational scientist for Hive Cancer Support in Northern Ireland and began her own projects improving public education around alcohol and sobriety. Melissa is committed to reducing the stigma of unhealthy drinking habits, specifically among women in Ireland.
