Building personal brands for Founders and C-levels

If LinkedIn content alone worked, everybody with 10K followers would have a fully booked calendar.

They don’t. Because we rarely know what actually triggers someone to reach out.

Some people DM you after one post, some follow quietly for months. Others never reach out at all, even if they’re interested, and only engage when you start the conversation.

That’s why content can’t carry the whole job.

In practice, content is maybe 25% of the equation.

The rest looks like this:

— 25% outreach - intentionally starting conversations with the right people
— 25% commenting - showing up where your buyers already pay attention
— 25% follow-up - staying visible long enough for timing to work in your favor

If you miss any one of these, your LinkedIn turns into a passive channel, like investing without knowing where the returns are supposed to come from.

The economic cost most founders don’t see:

When LinkedIn relies on content alone, you’re waiting on chance to produce revenue.

“I’ll handle LinkedIn myself in 2 hours a week” is the new “I’ll start going to the gym on Monday.”

Founders say this all the time: “I’ll just bang out a few posts on Sundays. Easy.”

Here’s what actually happens:

Week 1: You post twice. Feels good.
Week 2: One post. You’re “busy”.
Week 3: Nothing.
Week 4: “LinkedIn doesn’t work for us.”

It’s not that you’re lazy. You’re running a company, your attention is a war zone.

As much motivation as you might have, you're still lacking infrastructure.

A realistic LinkedIn engine looks like:

A library of angles pulled from your calls, decks, Slack rants
A simple posting rhythm (topics, formats, days)
Someone whose entire job is to make sure you show up in front of buyers

You are the worst person to be in charge of your own consistency. And no, a random “in‑house social post” once in a while is not the same thing.

Whenever I face the notorious writer’s block, I use a 3‑3‑3 framework to extract content from myself.

1. Three problems

I list three things that regularly punch my buyers in the face.

Some of them are: 

“I’m spending on ads with no idea what’s working” or “LinkedIn has been on my to‑do list for six months”.

Then I write one post for each problem. I describe it so clearly that if my buyer reads it, they think, “Yep, that’s uncomfortably accurate.”

2. Three stories

I force myself to find three short stories that sit on top of those problems:
A win, a miss, a moment where something finally clicked.

I tap into specific conversations, numbers, what I thought would happen vs what actually happened.

Each story gets tied back to one of the problems: “Here’s what we learned” or “Here’s what we stopped doing.”

3. Three beliefs

I write down three opinions I hold that would make some people in my space frown.

Not “spicy for the algorithm”, just the things I usually only say in private:
The "secret sauce" here is to not be afraid to offend anyone. Stand up for your truth.

Once I write the lists, the posts basically write themselves.

Normal people: “Finally, it’s the weekend.”

LinkedIn creators: “The weekend isn’t about rest. It’s a strategic window for authentic thought leadership when decision-makers are more receptive to long-form insights.”

If my writing were a place, it would be a jungle - loud, tangled, half‑terrifying, half‑gorgeous.

There are patches of it I never walk into. Barren clearings where the ground is hard and dusty, where every sentence feels forced. Those are the topics I think I “should” talk about, the ones that sound smart in theory but die the moment I touch them. I visit them out of obligation, then leave as fast as I can.

Then there are the parts that are so lush they’re almost overwhelming. Vines of half‑ideas hanging everywhere, strange plants I don’t have names for yet. This is where the good stuff lives: the odd metaphors, the sharp opinions, the stories I haven’t fully figured out. Most of it is still undiscovered, even by me. I can feel the weight of it, but I haven’t cut a path through.

And finally, there are a few narrow trails I keep wearing into the ground. I know exactly where to step. These are the themes I return to again and again. I go there when I need a story, a frame, a line that feels like mine. It’s comfortable enough, but never boring.

Some days the jungle feels welcoming; other days it tests my patience. But it never lies. If I try to force a clever thought, the undergrowth resists. If I come with a true feeling, even an uncomfortable one, it opens a small space and lets the sentence through.

I like to think that every writer carries such a place inside them, a landscape that changes with each book, each conversation, each heartbreak. Mine just happens to have too many vines, a few hidden clearings, and a stubborn refusal to let anything fake take root.

The best time to write publicly is when no one gives a damn.

You get to think in public without consequences. You can explore half-formed ideas, say things you’re still unsure about, test how you explain a problem before you’ve perfected the solution. You couldn't care less for approval, you're just thinking in public.

I get it, the silence can be disappointing, but you're quitting write before the compounding starts. 

Instead, use this quiet time to develop taste, learning what you believe, how you explain it, and what kind of thinking actually feels like yours. You’re sharpening the muscle that later has to carry attention without collapsing under it.

Once people start paying attention, writing gets harder. You second-guess, you edit yourself...You start wondering what will land instead of what’s true.

By the time people care, you want to already know what you sound like.

So if no one is watching yet, good. Write anyway. You’re laying foundations most people never bother to build.

People who expect to improve their content or writing by asking AI to do it for them are DELUSIONAL.

It’s like giving crayons to a three-year-old who’s never painted anything, and giving the same crayons to a master artist with 15 years of experience.

Who do you think produces the better outcome?

I’ve seen an increasing amount of posts over the past week about AI-driven content and how ghostwriting or content agencies are “under attack.” I honestly couldn’t be less bothered by people promising “1,457 posts in under 3 minutes.”

The only thing, and I mean the only thing, that matters is whether the posts you produce deliver something of real value to your ideal buyer: a clear actionable takeaway, a new realization, or a direct counter to a very specific objection.

It doesn’t matter if you use a listicle or long-form, short sentences or long ones, polished hooks or casual openings…

Formatting choices do not create differentiation.

AI can help you write faster, but it cannot decide what’s worth saying.

Your only leverage is your thinking and your taste.
Why would you outsource that?

CEO: “We do SaaS. Write about that.”
Me: You do SaaS? So does the dude in his mom’s basement with a no-code MVP.

Your LinkedIn positioning gap number 1: you’re not hyper-specific about the problem you solve.

For example:

- “AI-first async stand-ups that cut meeting time by 40%.”
- “Automated revenue reconciliation for finance teams drowning in spreadsheets.”
-“Security audits for startups who can’t afford a breach or a Big Four firm.”

CEO: “Okay… I see it. We’re being vague.”
Me: Vague feels safe. Vague is also invisible.

CEO: “But what if we box ourselves in?”
Me: You’re already boxed in. You’re just boxed into ‘everyone else.’

CEO: “So you’re saying we don’t sell software?”
Me: You sell relief, time back, fewer headaches, less risk. Say THAT.

CEO: “And if investors don’t like how narrow it sounds?”
Me: Investors like traction. Buyers create traction.

Here’s a round of imaginary copy no one asked for, but a lot of people will feel personally attacked by:

1/ If I sold a productivity tool:

“This won’t fix your life.
 But it will give you a prettier way to avoid the real problem.”

2/ If I sold sales coaching:

 “Have you tried being less desperate on calls?”

3/ If I ran a ‘thought leadership’ course:

 “We’ll teach you how to say nothing confidently.”

4/ If I ran a management consulting firm:

 “We’ll tell you what you already know.
 But with a 120-slide deck.”

5/ If I ran a rebranding agency:

 “Nothing’s wrong with your business.
 You’re just bored of the logo.”

One of the longest-running clients I’ve worked with is a founder in a traditional B2B business who’s been operating for 20+ years. We’re coming up on month 23 together.

Over that time, everything you’d expect has happened:

— Months where growth showed up mainly as followers
— Months where posts went unexpectedly viral
— Months where a lead reached out out of the blue, after 90 days of silence, without responding to a single message
— Quiet months where nothing dramatic happened at all

That range is normal. And it’s exactly why short-term snapshots are a terrible way to judge long-term work.

I’ve admired this founder and his team’s mindset since the very beginning. They understood that brand equity compounds over time, especially in traditional B2B, where trust is built long before a deal is even discussed.

Some of the most pleasant and meaningful ROI didn’t even happen on LinkedIn.

It showed up when their team shared stories from trade shows where people already knew their work, prospects mentioned specific posts in conversation, existing clients thanked them for the attention, consistency, and support they felt well before a sale was ever on the table.

In month two or three, the founder told Josh Cons and me:

“You are the experts. Tell me what I need to do, and I’ll do it.”

That collaborative mindset is exactly why we’re heading into month 23, still strong.

The funniest thing about “I’ll just post from the company page” is that buyers don’t talk about company pages.

They say things like: “Have you seen what that VP keeps posting about pricing?” or “I like how that founder explains our exact mess on LinkedIn.”

Nobody has ever said:

“Did you see that fire meme our vendor’s company page just dropped?”

Company pages are useful... for job posts, press, for having somewhere official to tag.

But the deal momentum and the trust happens in people’s heads, and people follow… people (shocker, I know I know).

I write stuff...

writing is the single most useful skill you can develop, regardless of your age, title, goals and background.

i've been writing in one way or another for the past 10 years. since the age of 18, i kept a journal that i attended to weekly, then switched back and forth between analog and digital writing.

it taught me how to navigate the reality i was living in, to be more self conscious about my thoughts, feelings and what i really stand for. it made me realize that what i think is true, and what is true, aren't necessarily the same thing.

over the years, i expanded my writing from weekly journaling to experimenting with poetry.  i wrote some good ones, but mostly cringe ones. i wrote short stories, fiction, non fiction, i wrote my goals and aspirations. 

writing down and seeing your thoughts changes your brain chemistry. you detach from them which allows you to see the vision a lot more clearly.

to learn writing is to learn thinking critically, developing sound arguments, re-discovering your beliefs. 

writing is speaking, marketing, connecting, communicating
writing is healing

writing is having the courage to admit your own wrongs
writing is leading

whoever you are, whatever you want to achieve in this life, try a month of thinking through writing. you'll thank yourself, that's for sure.
