Relaunching Koala as a full-service furniture/lifestyle brand. Launching 18 new products, with a fair load more to come. Maintaining a strong average for complaints per ad and also writing myself into everything so I can invoice the finance team and get a small amount of personal satisfaction by walking over to their desks and demanding they pay me. Finding that fine line in A/B testing content, working with our new global growth goals, building our content arm all whilst under the jerk cloud of COVID-19.

Taking the Koala in-house creative content up a notch. Building on the massive success of our integrated brand campaigns, all while continuing to grow the engine room of our BAU performance assets.

Senior Creative

Joined a rag tag group of real good humans and made some fun shit for one of Australia's new favourite companies. Billboards that made front pages, Youtube campaigns that had benchmark view-through-rates, radio spots that averaged about 50 complaints per spot, being boycotted by redheads nationally and (just casually) helping build Australia's fastest growing D2C brand.

Worked with Matt and Sandy, the best CD's in town and learned how to do little fancy boutique agency things. I was incredibly shit at this job and they rightfully let me go. But I did win a bunch of BADC Awards at like 23 which was, at the time, pretty sweet. But also counterpoint very shit at my time management so they fired me.

A big friendly creative dumbass. Also very good at D2C brand building. I like working for companies I believe in and convincing other people to believe in them too.

If your CFO is talking about the value of creative like this then Eucalyptus is the place you should try and work. 
If you’re a creative either A: wanting to break out of the hyper-siloed world of agencies¹ or B: truly believe you have great creative ability but have been stuck in lifecycle/content/social² then make yourself known to the hiring teams. 




¹ if you just want to be a specialist then stay there, that’s totally fine.
² all creative in their own way but not on the actual job title.

As a general rule, the closer you are to the creation of value in an organisation, the more likely you are to be compensated well for that value you created. This is why sales teams make big commissions, and anyone who sells work in any business (investment banking, agency, consulting) make the most money - and are generally both senior and charismatic - but NOT necessarily the most technically gifted (sometimes they're both and that's awesome for them)

In the past, the feedback loop on creative was slow, and difficult to attribute. This meant that the ability to tell if you were good or not was validated by your peers or a few atta boys/girl from your manager, but now with the volume of creative that is being moved by consumer and other businesses means that people who are talented on a single dimension (videography, copy, design) but can read and understand the story/theme/narrative have never been closer to the ability to produce economic value both for themselves and for where they work. The word you might use is X-factor/Ninja/rockstar/10x on a JD or something equally condescending, but I think the actual word is probably actually just 'empathy'.

The empathy to understand how your work may or may not resonate with a person who is not you. If you can master the system for building empathy, then the leverage on your pre-existing talent is extremely scalable at a company that wants to back creative work (Like Eucalyptus)

What are the implications for this? Basically that if you have spent your time perfecting your craft, and think you can read a room for themes, memes and scenes it's a good time to think about how to best leverage your talent - and we'd love to hear from you.

Is the above post right? I am an outsider looking in on a field, and I think generally Linkedin is an echo chamber, and I'm not even sure if there are creative folk on here. I'm asking what are the courses and places people go to learn and hone the skills above? Who are the best people in Australia - how do I find them (link me)? What is the best way to screen for the qualitative endeavour that is creative work?
