After we announced our raise, my phone blew up with messages from investors, old coworkers, and people I haven’t heard from since college.

But the message that hit the hardest didn’t come from any of them.

It came from my mom.

She’s not an "expert" in identity resolution or building SaaS companies. And somehow that meant more than every investor email combined.

Founders aren’t great at pausing. We often move the goalpost before the dust even settles. But that simple message reminded me the announcement wasn’t about the money. It was just validation for the team, for the belief, for the grind that got us here.

Metrics and headlines fade. Even now, talking about it weeks later, we’re back heads down executing our Q4 plan and will soon be planning for 2026.

But that text from my mom reminded me that the real mission is to build something that helps your customers, makes you and the people who love you proud.

If you’re a Founder or CEO at a Series A (or earlier) startup, here’s one thing I wish I’d learned sooner:

Focus and clarity beat cleverness every day of the week.

I don’t just mean in marketing copy. I also mean in how you cast vision and set direction for the company.

Your team can only help you achieve the company’s goals insofar as they understand them.

In the early days, we got caught up in grandiose plans and product strategies that sounded brilliant on paper but fell apart in execution.

After we raised our Series A, I took a step back and rethought everything — comp plans, department goals, org structure — with one purpose: to align the entire company around a single north star metric.

From engineering to CS to sales to marketing, every team is now involved and incentivized to help customers love and grow with our product longer.

If you’re scaling fast, clarity is your greatest form of leverage.

We’ve spent about $10K over the past 45 days testing Meta ads for B2B lead gen. A few takeaways so far:

1) Meta does work for B2B. With how much SaaS companies spend on LinkedIn, it’s still one of the most underrated paid channels.

2) The harder part is qualifying. We’re getting solid volume, but more small brands than we’d like. The next step is refining our messaging to make qualifications clearer up front.

3) Everything is a test right now — creative, copy, landing pages, targeting. No silver bullets yet.

No big vanity numbers to share (yet), but we’re learning what’s real before scaling spend. 

I’ll share an update in 45 (ish) days once we’ve got more data.

Ecom brands are losing $18 billion per year to abandoned carts. Why?

Because they treat every visitor the same.

Someone who spent 10 minutes on your product page, added to cart, and started entering shipping info is showing high intent.

Someone who clicked around for 30 seconds and bounced is more likely to just be curious than actually showing high intent.

If you’re sending both of them a “you forgot something!” email, you’re wasting sends and losing out on potential revenue.

Real cart recovery happens when you understand WHO abandoned and WHY they abandoned.

BFCM is around the corner. This is when abandoned cart recovery is most expensive.

You can't afford to waste sends on people who were never going to buy. And you can't afford to lose people who just needed the right nudge.

Our identity resolution match rate could be 90%. It would be the highest in the industry. But we deliberately dial it back. Here's why: 

We only want to send emails to people who overlap in TWO groups - showing intent AND matching your ideal customer profile.

A 35-year-old male browsing men's clothing? Perfect match. Send the email.

A 22-year-old female on the same site? Probably not the customer. Don't waste the send.

Most of our competitors brag about their match rates: "we can identify 85% of your traffic!"

Great. But what percentage of that 85% should you actually be marketing to?

There is a broader shift happening in identity resolution: from pure identification to intelligent activation.

Brands don't just want more email subscribers. You already have hundreds of thousands or even millions of people on your list.

What you need is clarity about who to reach out to and when.

List intelligence, not just list growth.

Two weeks ago, Shopify announced their integration with OpenAI which is supposed to “kill” website browsing. Here’s how I explained to a team member about what this means for brands and Tie as a company:

1) Near-term impact: brands will be under pressure to understand their traffic sources better because they have less time to learn on-site.

2) I think it makes our product more valuable.

A few weeks prior to that I asked ChatGPT for some brands to finish furnishing an Airbnb. I got the links, opened them quickly and said to myself "nah, don't like how that looks”...off to the next one. Until eventually I got to a product I liked, with the right price, and I bought.

Those brands have almost no information about me. They don't know anything beyond maybe a UTM parameter.

All the learning is happening in ChatGPT.

This is why identity resolution becomes critical. When visits get hyper-short, you need to capture as much information as possible from compliant sources so you know who's worth retargeting.

3) There is still one looming question: will this turn ChatGPT into an ad network? And, if so, will they share advertiser data? Can we get click data, prompt data, or send targeting data back in like with Meta?

Ecom operators: I'm curious to hear what you think? Do you think this is going to be a big disruptor or just another entry point?

Fair pricing is a huge strategic advantage. 

Case in point: we recently won a $50m+ brand because we don’t follow the typical Silicon Valley advice of charging as much as humanly possible for SaaS products.

The owner of this brand came to us looking for a solution to their email deliverability problem. They talked to another provider who quoted them $50,000/yr for their product.

When our quote came back 75% cheaper, not only did they sign immediately, they added another solution too.

I keep talking about pricing because it’s not discussed enough by other SaaS founders.

Every DTC operator I know is constantly asking themselves “how can I do this cheaper?”

If a brand’s operating on a margin of 10% and wants to grow it, the first place they’re going to look at is cutting SaaS costs that make up maybe 15-20% of Opex. It’s just math.

So part of Tie’s mission is making the best quality product at the best value possible.

We’re not always the cheapest solution but we’re far less expensive than the value our product provides.

Tech loves to rag on big consulting but I’m glad that's where I started my career.

1) Many of the best business operators got their start in consulting — Satya, Sheryl, Meg, and bunch of others.

2) You get access to people and you'd likely never meet otherwise. Executives at some of the world's most important companies. Seeing them operate changes the way you operate.

3) You learn how to truly sell. You're taught how to diagnose a prospect's problem, communicate the value of your solution, and help them buy. Big difference from "here's my thing, it costs this much, please buy".

Anyone else work in consulting before tech? What's your take?

If a product is doing the same job after some performance improvements, you haven’t earned the right to charge more.

We’ve had this debate on my team several times. Even recently, some of the team wanted to double our pricing after a product improvement and I said no.

You only charge more if your feature or improvement supports new use cases or new revenue/profit drivers.

Charging more for a product that performs incrementally better than it did 3 months ago feels like a rug pull for customers. We’ve all been there when a company increased the price of a product after making an incremental performance upgrade, and it’s pretty annoying.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for high margins. We need high gross margins to properly run this business.

But sustainable pricing keeps customers from ever questioning your value.
